JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

I stopped using a range last Thur because it looked like tohox righted itself, then it went awry again. Going back to using a 10% range 60-66 tohox for holiday/weekend. 65-70 for a weekday and 55-60 for a discount day.

 7.0 - 7.7m Monday

 5.5 - 6.1m Tuesday

12.5 -13.8m Week

Projection

Wed-Fri could have a little strength if some people take their vacation days this week or it drops back to week 6 lows.

Sat-sun will have a big drop, does it hold above OW one more time with competition fading and extra seats?

"Official" Estimates on sunday below. We need an actual to iron out tohox issue. Maybe corpse will have something today or the wed update on thur from screen daily

Jn 143,200,000

OS 768,900,000

Tohox Estimate Range thru Tuesday, including a potential official weekend increase

Jn 155,700,000-159,000,000

OS 781,400,000-784,700,000

Will it crash like Its HMC or soar like SA. Murgatroyd, your weekly cum chart is going to look like a jet fighter turning on the after burners going after the SA bogie. Post it.

I'm waiting for actuals, which are running a bit late this week, before I post it.

It doesn't seem like it will crash anytime soon. It weathered all the big competition that came out the last 2 weeks and it looks like the road ahead is virtually competition free for some time. I don't know what there is for upcoming Japanese movies, but the only thing I see for Hollywood movies is X-Men: DOFP on May 30, and X-Men movies don't really fare well in Japan with the first one doing just 17m and every one after that declined.

I don't think competition is the issue here, just the nature of the japanese boxoffice itself : may (except Golden Week) and June are almost always among the weakest months of the year. The question is whether Frozen will follow the trend of the other movies (-50%), have a limited drop like some movies do it (-30-35% like Thermae Romae in 2012) or have an incredibly limited drop (-15-20%). I think the second option is the most likely, but who knows ? And then, there's the strengh of the weekdays too...

Finding Nemo final gross is inflated by a minor re-release in 2006 and a major 3d re-release in 2012. In its original run, in 2003, it grossed about 330M$ Dom and 440M$ OS (less than Matrix reloaded in same year)

More like 339 and ~520

Yeah, I was accounting for the 3D re-release in 2012. It earned a bit above $30m OS. I actually haven't heard of any 2006 release at all for FN. Mojo doesn't have it listed as one of the releases. And the DOM totals match up between the original release and the 3D re-release.

Anyway, regarding the competition: things are going to move. I don't know if it's Fox or Disney who is going to shift around, but Dory and Dragon3 are not going to get released on the same day. Just as CA3 and BatSoup aren't going to end up with the same release date. And while I'll concede that IA5 is probably going to be pretty big internationally, I'm not convinced Angry Birds is going to be a major threat. It's a big brand, but remaining so in two years isn't guaranteed.

Regardless, my point about Dory is that the potential is there to beat Frozen. It's certainly not a guarantee.

WDAS is good, but does it deserve the WW crown more than Pixar?

Well i guess it is a perpetual up and down... Pixar had the crown for a while now and since they did not really deliver on their last movies i guess it is just fair that the crown changes ownership. Though i think WDAS still has to prove that its revival is really lasting. BH6 will be interesting :)
