>American Sniper should be the first film this calendar year to debut above ¥300 million, and delivers one of Eastwood's better debuts in recent years. Unless legs turn out surprisingly bad, which they should be quite the opposite of really with Eastwood's name and the Oscar buzz, it'll probably exceed ¥2 billion (about $20 million).

I'll post a list of Clint Eastwood's films opening weekends and totals later on today. Japan has been one of his best markets for decades.

>The Fault in Our Stars joins the young adult/international book phenomenon disappointment club, along with Fifty Shades of GreyTwilight, and The Hunger Games. None of these films have had any impact in Japan, often barely even debuting in the Top 5.

>Mr. Children [Reflection]'s weekend estimate is a very, very rough guess. It should be in the Top 10 again thanks to its performance at the Usual Locations alone, but it doesn't seem to be doing much of anything else elsewhere.

Also from Corpse (World of KJ):

Big Hero 6's run is starting to slow down in Japan, even though it's still in the Top 3 after 10 weeks, but the Best Animated Picture win at the Academy Awards tonight will give it an additional boost.

It should remain in the Top 10 through March, so it should be looking at 14-16 weeks there. Very, very impressive.

Smart people Japan has then, avoiding such useless young adult book adaptions. (Although fault in our stars is among the better ones)

3,018 (-32%), Maestro! (Shochiku/Asmik Ace) Week 4

Great Saturday, and considering Sunday will be much, much bigger (1st of the Month = discount day), we're probably going to see some excellent holds (sub-30%) across the board.

American Sniper is looking at a good second weekend atop the box-office before it's dethroned next weekend by Doraemon.

Excellent for Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin I. It sold through nearly 70% of its available admissions yesterday. The Usual Locations does, however, represent 62% of its total theater count (8 out of 13), so it should come in a couple spots lower on the national level. I figured it had a good chance of breaking the Weekend Top 10 despite the theater count of just 13, but it might debut in the Top 5.

Big Hero 6 being down 1% shows it's already benefiting from its Oscar win, and it'll surely see a weekend increase once Sunday is over. Perhaps even a double digit increase. It'll also remain in the Top 3 (should even rise to #2) for an 11th-consecutive weekend.

It's no Frozen, but it has already destroyed any other previous performance by a Walt Disney Animation film (opening, legs, total, etc.), and honestly, it's performance is better than any Pixar film, too. It'll finish behind Finding Nemo and Toy Story 3 (its admissions may pass the latter, too), but its weekly run and legs have been much stronger.

The other openers are pretty disappointing. Have a Song on Your Lips should have a big Sunday, but it isn't going to come close to ¥100 million over the weekend. Chef looks to be doing alright, but 75% of its theater count (46 out of 61) is represented at the Usual Locations, so it won't come in too much higher than it already is. It should just miss the Weekend Top 10 (Fault, Mortdecai, and Annie will be above it).
