JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

So FB increased over last Monday (+42%). It's 5th Monday is actually very close to RO's 2nd Monday. By next week FB should overtake it in dailies. RO is actually one of the only 2 titles in Top 10 that dropped from last week, and quite substantially so (-32%). I think it's a combination of screen loss and average WOM. Can you confirm any of my theory @Olive

Your Name... insane!  Just simply insane!  Another box-office phenomenon in Japan merely 2 years after the release of Frozen, Your Name has defied all odds.  I remember when Corpse was hesitant to say $100 million was locked even after two weeks of release and it's gone on to double that!  Simply amazing and deserves all the success it is getting.

RO WOM is actually very good, 4.29/5 on Yahoo, comparing to FB's 3.93/5

That doesn't translate to BO, yet, though.

I think a film can have good WOM, but not good re-watch-counts based on e.g. genre, story details or...

generally speaking

Yahoo is big in Japan?

Uhm, isn't good WOM exactly what breaks those barriers?

I think that is too general, at least in my surrounding or how I understand the use

General speaking:

there were discussions here about e.g Moana's OS numbers... maybe being based un the 'wrong' season.

Personally I have no opinion, as I do not watch animated films

Let's say for the moment that the theory is right, people click not as much, bcs iz is winter, beside thinking the film is.... whatever.

WOM can be good, middle or bad ?

Word of Mouth = reactions of the people, not the advertisement creations / government / news outlet...

Has nothing to do with breaking anything. It can be breaking (helping or hindering), but in basic it means something moved a part of the audience to react.

Lets say Romeo & Juliet would be written today:

people might say: it is a YA story, but it is really good written, and .... worth to praise. (I do not want to start a discussion about Shakespeare, used it as his work is usually considered to be of high quality)

People will be aware of it being good, but that does not mean someone, who can not stand YA stories will want to watch it. Or more than once

Example myself: I want to slap each time I have to suffer through another Romeo & Juliet the leads and some others ob their stupidity. It can be played by great actors, be an interesting version and I still wont watch it voluntarily

If a film's summary doesn't connect for seasonal or emotional reactions or... reasons to a even big part of the GA or... it can still have great WOM

Or all the Oscar-bait films that are actually great for... would make $2b ww and more.

I never post here.  I do not know exactly what this article is trying to say.  It is just... that looks like an insane number for Resident Evil, and an insane opening in Japan.  I think, RIGHT??

Also of note, Sony opened Resident Evil: The Final Chapter in Japan, well ahead of the rest of the world, and grabbed the No. 1 slot with industry sources pegging it at $9.65M on 786 screens to top the recent start of Rogue One in that market. Japan typically overindexes on the franchise, coming in as the top offshore hub on each of the previous installments.

>Resident Evil: The Final Chapter debuts atop the box office, delivering an opening weekend and 3-day total pretty much on par with the last two films, Retribution and Afterlife.

The sixth, and final, film in the Resident Evil franchise sold 400,957 admissions over the weekend frame, and sold 643,754 admissions since opening on Friday. Its debut over the 3-day weekend is 11.0% ahead of Retribution; 11.7% behind Afterlife. Both of its predecessors went on to exceed ¥4 billion ($48 million and $57 million, respectively), with the last one coming within striking distance of the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone - The Final Chapter is likely to follow suit, especially with the New Year boost next week, so look for a total between ¥4-5 billion ($35-45 million).

>Fantastic Beasts has now easily exceeded the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone, and with New Year coming up soon, I'm confident in projecting that it will indeed outgross the lowest-grossing Harry Potter film, Deathly Hallows Part 1. It's on track to gross between ¥7-7.5 billion ($65-70 million).

>Your Name. is entering its eighteenth week of release this weekend, and delivered another weekend increase to its ongoing performance. So far, after eighteen weeks, it has sold 16,407,833 admissions, making it the fifth most-attended film in history, and it's less than 430,000 admissions away from overtaking Titanic now - which it'll do, easily, come next week.

When all is said and done, and it'll be awhile before then, there is a strong likelihood that Your Name. will end up beating Frozen and Titanic in gross to become the #2 film of all-time, behind Spirited Away. And in terms of admissions, it's likely to become, at least, the #4 most-attended film of all-time, behind Spirtied Away, Frozen, and Tokyo Olympiad.

Of course, it's exceeded every goal set before it each and every time, so who knows, maybe Spirited Away is truly in danger after all these years.
