A lot of wide openers this weekend, but few are going to make much of an impact.

>Doctor Strange finally arrives in Japan and will dethrone Your Name. (entering its 23rd weekend) from atop the box office. It's pretty rare for a Marvel or DC film to open at #1 in the Japanese market, so while its opening will be standard for the genre, the ranking itself will be a nice achievement.

>Your Name., having returned to the #1 spot in its 22nd weekend last week, is going to slip to second (maybe thirdish) place this weekend, but it continues to look very strong at this late stage of its release despite another round of many, many wide openers debuting. It's going to easily claim the biggest 23rd weekend of all-time as it continues to outpace Spirited Away, the only film to ever still be posting numbers anywhere close to this after 6 months in release, on a week-to-week basis.

>Kiseki: Sobito of That Day is a film about the members of the Japanese band GReeeeN, and while pre-sales are good, it's only playing at 156 locations which will limit its potential a bit. It's difficult to predict fan-driven, small scale, releases like this one, so keep an eye on it over the weekend - it could surprise a bit, or come in well below my projection.

Your Name is having a really incredible performance. It looked like it was loosing steam back in October/November and headed towards a ¥20/21 billion final gross but rebounded spectularly thereafter and is now having the best late legs of any major movie in Japan.

But this also puts into perspective how insane performance of the Top 3 (Frozen, Titanic, Spirited Away) was. I mean, Your Name is still not garanteed to take down any of them. Corpse says its weekend was over 40% higher than SA's corresponding weekend but it seems like SA had already grossed so much by then that it doesn't matter. YN would need a multiplier of 55-60x from this weekend (going by Corpse's ¥127m estimate) to take it down which seems impossible to me (especially since it didnot get nominated at the Oscars, and will lose all its premium screens next week).

I'd say the odds of beating Frozen are 60%, 40% for Titanic and around 10% for Spirited Away.

Pretty sure it lost all of its premium screens to Doctor Strange already.

Any predictions for La La Land? It's released around the Oscars, so I'm wondering if the buzz will be big (especially if it wins Best Picture and any of the other 14 nominations). Seems to be doing well in South Korea, which is usually a good bellwether for a movie's potential in Japan.
