Great for One Piece, and good for TLK. Also, am I seeing this right? TS4 only dropped 11.5% and WWY 9% from last week despite One Piece and TLK opening. We'll see how it goes tomorrow, but it's looking good for all four of them.

One Piece Film Stampede, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the anime, delivered big on its first day, earning the biggest Friday this year. The last three films have all opened above ¥1 billion, but as the first Friday release in the franchise, will Stampede follow suit, or did it burn off enough fan demand to miss the mark?

The Lion King did pretty well, though the Friday start does suggest it won't be an uber-blockbuster in the market. That said, this is a film where its opening day (even opening weekend) could be misleading. Obon Festival is literally around the corner (Monday), and as one of the three major holiday periods in Japan, it can easily change a film's trajectory.

Rather than a Weekend Forecast, I'll be tracking these films "hourly" over the weekend and post updates to see how they compare to other big openers over the past several years.

Lion King's Friday actually seems good to me, being basically identical to Aladdin's and only slightly below Toy Story 4's.

Looking at Saturday's pre-sales:

The Lion King pre-sales are almost 40% below Aladdin's. This isn't surprising, and it shouldn't be seen as "disappointing." This is the weekend before Obon Festival begins, and it will make serious money over the upcoming weekdays.

One Piece Film Stampede is clearly frontloaded. It burned off a lot of demand on Friday (it's the first film in the franchise to open on a Friday), and its Saturday is likely going to see a noticeable decline, which is pretty rare in the market. It'll take a miracle for it to open above ¥1 billion over the weekend frame, though its 3-day total will probably be roughly on par with the first three days of release of the previous film.

Weathering With You is looking at a potential sub-10% decline. If that happens, it could defend its position at #1 in its fourth weekend. And if it does... it's probably going to be #1 well into September.

All of this means we could be in store for a three-film race for the #1 spot this weekend.

And because I'll get asked, Toy Story 4 is also aiming at a sub-10% drop, so it's going to easily manage the new competition as well.

I wonder what caused the recent explosion in the grosses of One Piece and Detective Conan movies. The absence of Miyazaki maybe?

2009-2012 was the peak of the series's popularity. and One Piece Film Strong World is what got a lot of Japanese people into One Piece and when the manga sales skyrocketed.

we've only had 3 one piece films since 2009 excluding specials.

With the release of Strong World, Eiichro Oda (author/creator of One Piece) became a chief supervisor of the One Piece films. He writes the story, designs the characters, and provides the team with hundreds of pages of sketches.

His direct involvement immediately got the many, many fans (it's still far and away the most popular manga in the country/the world) interested in the films versus just the anime viewers. The films are much higher quality now ("Film" in their titles isn't for nothing), and have been released three/fours years apart. Since Strong World, Oda has also created loose-canon chapters that lead up to the release of the films. And Toei Animation has also been dedicating the month leading up to the release of the new films with original episodes that tie-in with the story.

Lion King running 30% lower than Aladdin and 40% lower than Toy Story 4. Not bad at all. Should open around 7/8M dollars and end above Zootopia, Dory and Despicable Me 3.

TLk is at 164k with 1.5h more to go so maybe it will get 166k. Aladdin had 270k so that would be 38.5% lower than Aladdin and 39% lower than TS4 saturday in theathers that get tracked (70% of the market). TS4 had a holiday sunday so it went to 400k + and aladdin did 275k or so.

One piece is looking to end 191k today that down from friday that did 235k. So OP is probably looking at 12.9m OW + Friday.

TLK is looking at a 9.4m including friday. Or a $6.8m weekend. Honestly in a few hours corpse will probably report his predictions that will be a lot better :)

Btw I use a sunday that was a decent big stronger than saturday for my calculation of TLK.
