I also haven't seen Network, but if he won for best supporting, then yes, that is bullshit. Burgess Meredith should have won for Rocky.

A few people don't like the fact she won because she's only in Network for about four minutes, but I thought she was fantastic.
4815162342
Jason Robards won that year for All the President's Men, and he deserved that win hell of a lot more than Meredith, good as Meredith was.

Webslinger
While I wouldn't call it a bad performance, Judi Dench winning for Shakespeare in Love has always been a head-scratcher for me. I'm not against giving Oscars for brief performances, but she didn't do anything special with the roughly eight minutes of screen time she had in the film.Beatrice Straight, on the other hand, is a textbook example of knocking very brief screen time out of the park en route to an Oscar win. She only has one scene in Network, but it's damn memorable.

CoolioD1
Am I seriously the only one who hated Roberto Benigni in Life is Beautiful?I didn't like the film, but I was OK with him winning, he was good and it's pretty rare to see the Oscars reward a foreign language or a comedic performance. acsc1312
I can definitely say Paltrow didn't deserve hers. Not necessarily a bad performance, but Winslet didn't deserve hers. Streep was a beast in Doubt. More later.
baumer
As good as Pacino was in Scent of a Woman, Washington should have won for Malcolm X that year.Roberts winning for Brockovich is deserving imo.
Jack Nevada
Roberts winning for Brockovich is deserving imo. She was really great in that movie, but a lot of people think that Ellen Burstyn should have won for Requiem for a Dream. I havent seen that film yet so I cant judge

I havent seen that film yet so I cant judgeThat's because RFAD is a meatier role, not necessarily a better one imo. When you are in a role that shows you deteriorating because of drugs, it's more flashy than a mother of 2 or 3 taking on big business. But Roberts did beautifully and I'm glad she won for that performance.
acsc1312
I think Brokovich deserved it. Burstyn's performance is overrated, IMO.

I think he depicts a horribly sugarcoated version of the holocaust, and does exactly what Moulin Rouge! tried to do and failed miserably too: mixing farce and silliness with horrible tragedy. You need a master filmmaker to pull that off
Jake Gittes
Tommy Lee Jones in The FugitiveAlan Arkin in Little Miss Sunshine Julia Roberts in Eryn BrockovichAnd, while I admittedly haven't seen Art Carney's Oscar-winning performance in Harry & Tonto, I just can't imagine it to be a performance great enough to deserve an Oscar over Pacino in Godfather II, Nicholson in Chinatown, Hoffman in Lenny and Finney in The Murder on the Orient Express. Seriously, each of those four performances was absolutely brilliant, yet neither of them won.
