Kong: Skull Island | March 10, 2017 | Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John Goodman | Crosses 500M WW

The marketing did its job. The focusing on ATJ running through San Francisco for some reason or the other while all everyone in the audience wants to see at the point is Godzilla finally fighting the 2 monsters failed the movie.

Well that I agree.

Gareth got the build up right.

He just forgot the release. It was like a porn movie, except the camera was pointed at the wall. He at least got the cumshot right.

I'm surprised to learn Universal didn't own King Kong, I assume they'll get compensation from Legendary or perhaps be a co-producer on the film.

I wonder if it'll keep its current release date, perhaps WB could move it to summer either June 23rd and have Wonder Woman move to Spring 2017 or August

King Kong as a charecter is apparently in the Public Domain;the films are still under copyright but the charecter is fair game.

What is interesting is that Legendary is trying to make up with Warners after their messy divorce. You have to wonder if Legendary and Universal are not already having problems. "JUrassis World" and "Compton" were films that were  in development at Universal  before the Legendary signed the deal with Universal, and Legendary were brought on board as sort of a reward for signing with Universal. I wonder if Legendary did not begin to make demands of Universal after JW huge sucess, and Universal got "Hey,it was our film and we made you Junior Partners, so don't go acting like you deserve all the credit ".

And Pacific Rim 2 has just been postponed by Universal. Going to be interesting.

If WB has control of Kong and Godzilla, not sure how Universe proceeds with a monster universe unless WB and them collaborate.

Universal has a monster universe;ever hear of a little film franchise called "Jurrasiac Park/World".?

I am sure that one reason why Universal got cold feet about Skull Island was "We have a huge monster franchise with "JUrassica World;why do we need two?"/

Then of course you have the classic Universal monsters ..the Mummy, Franky, Drac, Wolfman, the Creature, etc. Universal does not really need Kong, which is they seem to have dumped it.

Also, Skull Island will have references to Godzilla 2014, mainly the company in the movie, Monarch. Also, it seems like Legendary is considering that Kong and Godzilla eventually become allies.

Yeah, I totally see that. They start off fighting one another then team up to face a bigger threat.

Amazed by all the drama that has spun out of something as stupid as another King Kong reboot

Apparently the drama started when Tull came out saying he made Jurassic World or whatever. And Universal thinks Warcraft and Great Wall are super bombs so they don't want another.

Tull takes a lot of credit for movies, he single handedly made the entire Nolan Batman trilogy and Jurassic World and was responsible for Universal's great year.

Yeah but it seems like all this info's only coming out now because of their King Kong disagreement. Somebody fed THR this story, and they wouldn't have done so if Tull hadn't struck a new deal with WB

i dont get how they can just switch to Warner Bros. Didn't Legendary sign a 5 year contract for Universal to distribute their films?

I would imagine usually those deals are not exclusive exclusive, ie, yes they have a deal but Universal can decline participation and allow him to take it elsewhere. Some money may be involved. Kind of how for example, Jerry Bruckheimer made a couple of movies with Sony while under contract with Disney (Black Hawk Down for example).

Yes, but if Universal turns it down, the contract gives the production company the right to take it elsewhere. There is even a term for this in the film business:Turn Around. It's standard for this kind of contract.

And it's not just distribution.Universal is also involved in the funding of some Legendary films. In this case,Universal pulled the funding and Legendary has the right to shop it to other studios.

And looks as if the same thing is happening with "Pacific Rim 2"and I suspect when the plug is officially pulled,Legendary will try to shop it around to other studios.
