Official Weekend Est: MJ1 56.9M Penguins 25.8m BH6 18.77m Interstellar 15.8M

Well great, thanks for proving my point that it will only need slightly stronger legs than CF from here on out to challenge 330m. Exodus is no more competition than the big December '13 adult hits that were American Hustle and Wolf of Wall Street, so that's a weak argument. As I said, TH3 having the finale factor is the one thing I could see truly keeping MJ1 from having a slightly leggier run than CF.

And that was my point that it is showing no signs that it will have those strong legs. If we take full week into account, MJ1 earned 85% of its first weekend in the second week, CF had earned 88% from a much higher opening.

Let's see next weekend how the films will hold. Given that there won't be any wide releases next week (just a single film at 500 theatres), films will manage to hold on to their theatre counts next weekend.

Here's what happened last year on the weekend after Thanksgiving. Note the lack of big new openers, and very small theater drops for most films, and yet most films dropped 50% or more anyways:

Cuckoo's Nest is a bad example. It doesn't feel like something older adults would normally get pumped about. It also deserved its BP win - wouldn't mind a Jaws win but Cuckoo's Nest has its merits

E.T. and Raiders of the Lost Ark both should have won. Same for BTTF, Goodfellas, The Exorcist, Cool Hand Luke/Bonnie and Clyde, 2001, Clockwork Orange, Taxi driver, Raging Bull/The Shining, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Mary Poppins, Fight Club, etc

The most timeless films don't usually win BP - just seems to be how it is

That is the case every year. IIRC, last year Out of the furnace was the only new opener, and still we saw big drops.

EDIT: Kitik posted the chart.

Im a a loss of words for Penguins. It looked like a perfect, quirky movie for families over the break, and marketing was good, but it fell flat on its face before it even got out the gate. No hyperbole, the end could be near for DWA. Its unexplainable how their movies just cant sell anymore.

Its like DWA went out and said gay marriage sucks and the now media aka moviegoers are boycotting them. Honestly I dont even know if Shrek 5 could sell. One thing you could say is MAKE MORE ORGINAL MOVIES, but they have been (kinda). Other than Croods, its been flop after flop after flop. Crazy. Penguins shouldve been a hit, but oh wellz.

It more like they said gay marriage sucks, all religions sucks, we support the KKK, and America is giant piece of shit.

Not sure if this point has been brought up in this thread before, but the TV shows may be hurting the movies. The TV shows are basically the same characters, but with worse animation and cornier dialogue. And there is no value added element to the movies compared to the TV shows. The TV shows may actually have diluted the brands significantly.

Becuse while a popularly rousing very good sports movie it's not a great movie while Taxi Driver is.  Rocky doesn't come close in terms of directing, writing or acting to Taxi Driver, nor to Network or All The President's Men.

My choice would be Network.

I enjoy all of the Ice Age movies excluding the second. The first is a great road trip movie, the third is a great adventure movie, and the fourth is a decent adventure movie. I think they are mostly good entertainment for the whole family. I only felt like I couldn't enjoy the second one, it was too juvenile and generic for me.

Rocky still have the best music montage in the history of film, when the iconic music begins and Rocky starts running all over Philadelphia : goosebumps.

Birth of an Icon.

rocky fits the description better than taxi driver. Are people really denying the cultural relevance of rocky? It's way more iconic than taxi driver.

Just want to point out that Neighbors spends a whole scene referencing the most iconic part of Taxi Driver and using it for a comedic bit.

So yeah, Taxi Driver's pretty timeless.
