This was even better on a second viewing. The humor in the middle clicked much better for me this time, not sure why I found it out of place the first time. That third act is practically flawless. Just brilliant.

Laika are making good movies but they need to find a way to lower the 60m budgets if they want to survive. Stop motion has a niche audience. You can't just hope that it will be a very big hit like Chicken Run or that it will turn into a mainstream classic with re-releases and merchandise like Nightmare before Christmas. Those two movies are the outliers. For stop motion movies the ceiling seems to be a little over 100m WW and a cult following after that.

Holy toledo! Kubo keeps sprinting onward despite losing a couple hundred theaters! 

 

Hopefully when it opens in more markets it does very well OS. I'm very happy it actually may end up on the higher side of Laika's grosses overall.

If it keeps ParaNorman's pace it will get $50-$51 million total.

Coraline was way better. It is the best Laika film out there.

I dunno if I would use that many great thans, but yeah it's their best. I do like the tone and look of Coraline, however.

I exaggerated a tad for emphasis, but it is their first film that I've been able to fully endorse.

I think that the main reason this movie has so much credence in critics' groups is because it's an amazing technical achievement. In terms of thematic depth, it's at the same level as the Kung Fu Panda movies. Don't get me wrong, Kung Fu Panda and Kubo are both very good. But I don't think anyone outright praises either for their genius scripts.

Indeed, I saw this a few weeks ago and I wasn't too impressed with the overall story. Dialogue was mostly sharp though.

 

But the visuals and imagination are really something, this movie is definitely worth seeing in my opinion. Very, very original at times, especially near the beginning.

 

I just wish they went all-in with the possibilities they unlocked instead of resorting to generic stuff as far as story and action goes.
