Selma should have some legs, but for a pic about MLK, who is the Peyton Manning of Civil Rights, $11-14M is a disappointing. There's no way American Sniper is going that low and buzz seems higher: it's crazy to think a movie about a soldier named Chris Kyle will likely outgross the storied MLK. But hey that's BO.

Good for Taken.

Well hopefully Selma turns out like this:

$5 million Friday

$7.5 million Saturday

$5 million Sunday

$17.5 million 3-day ($20 million)

Adds 400-800 theaters next weekend due to Oscar buzz + MLK weekend connection.

$22 million 3 day/$31 million 4 day ($60 million)

$17.5 million ($86 million)

$14 million ($107 million)

$11.5 million ($124 million)

$11 million/$13 million ($142 million)

$9.5 million ($154 million)

$7 million ($165 million)

$5 million ($173 million)

$3 million ($178 million)

$1.5 million ($180 million)

$184 million DOM total

Not likely, but I just find it sad Selma could do $25-30 million over the 3-day. It seemed to be in prime position.

I'm not one to disagree with those who say there aren't enough good movies about the African American experience in America, but shit like this is why. Maybe if all of those "urban" demographics went to see movies like Selma instead of Ride Along, things would be a little different.

On the other hand, Selma really should have received a bigger marketing effort. It's silly that the mediocre Unbroken got a bigger push than this, and look...Unbroken's doing well.
