I guess I'd have to agree with you and Snoopy. Guardians, while opening to 94M, was still predicted to do around 70, so the change isn't quite as drastic. American Sniper is set to do 2 or 3 times as much as anyone was willing to guess. I have to say, while it is yet to be seen how good of legs this film has (and if it can surpass the relatively outstanding holds by Guardians) American Sniper has to be one of the most shocking Opening Weekends I have ever experienced in my short time following the box office (I missed out on Avengers by a few monthes).

Personally, Passion of the Christ OW had similar shock value to AS. No question Avengers had shock value but this is bigger.

I'm hoping this can achieve #1 domestic of 2014 that way hunger games doesn't break the trend of no franchise winning two years in a row. And even if you made the excuse of it didn't make its money in 2014, you can bring up Guardians made the most in 2014 not Mockingjay.

Yeah, if this won (very unlikely) and someone were to argue that it doesn't count, then they would have to admit that Mockingjay doesn't win either.

American Sniper may end up being a box office game changer like 300. March used to be a box office dead zone till 300 opened to 70M there leading to big franchise pics and blockbusters opening in March. Sniper may do the same for January.

God I hope so, that way they can spread some of these blockbusters out more

That would be really nice. I'm sick of January/February being full of shit movies.

There's nothing inherently bad about January - people do not steer clear of the cinema in the winter. If appealing films release in January, they will make money. It's currently just a circular argument from studios - they don't release major films in January, January therefore has low BO, therefore they don't release major films in January, etc.

The same thing went for August last year. The reason August doesn't make money is because no one releases films there - Guardians of the Galaxy proved that August didn't have to be a dead month. No month has to be dead.

Shouldn't we just pump the brakes a tad on 300 million talk?

It's always fun to speculate, but I have to admit that 280 is more likely. I don't think we should expect 300, but we shouldn't be surprised either if it makes it.

I'm just so excited that I can say "I was around for American Snipers opening weekend!"

And hopefully (the day that January stopped being a dumping ground).

I don't think it will ever happen really. The 2nd half of January, the 2nd half of February, the 2nd half of August, 1st half of September and the last weekend of April (even with Fast Five opening huge there a few years ago, the movie was put there because the Summer opener was weak enough) seem to be stuck forever in the dumping ground zone.
