He didn't turn it down.  He was attached for years and it kept falling through.  Then when Sony picked it up (after Weinstien and Universal) they wanted more star power and dumped Reeves.

He was talking about Passengers, not Speed 2, and I think Reeves was off the project by the time Sony acquired it.

this film really lucked out getting in 3000 theaters for 3 weeks.  It is at 17 now, look for it to pass 30 by Jan 2nd, and before theater drop

It has also been pointed out that this POS movie looks even worse coming out with Manchester On The Sea opening wide, an movie about a man handling intense grief that pretty much is making a high position on every critic's "Ten Best List" and getting almost all rave reviews.

It more than doubled its budget and it still has a few more territories to open in(including japan).   So not a complete bomb
