I'll admit the more positive elements of themes are given more focus, but I'm just saying, going off of Bird's opinions in interviews and Twitter, I know he's been against dystopian sci-fi in every sense a lot recently, and the themes are definitely in the film. Personally, the fact that it's in there with any focus pisses me off, so it's still really really bad.

It's not the worst movie ever, but the themes are really poorly done for something meant to be uplifting. IDK, take Tele Jr to see it and tell me what you think

EDIT: It also doesn't help that these poor themes are done with such prowess that it makes Nolan look like the king of subtlety. :P

Think you honed in on the wrong things, my friend. The bit about dystopian scifi movies was just an amusing side note. The movie was railing against society's acceptance of all of these terrible things happening in the world, and asking us to do something about it. It was about belief in a better future, not a future without post-apocalyptic stories.

That's a childish interpretation of the film's themes.

I'm honestly appalled that that's all you heard when watching the movie. Also, the themes don't need to be subtle in a fucking kids movie.

Disney seems to do this every year, they spend $200m on some "original" movie. it turns out to not be that good and bombs, then it costs them hundreds of millions of dollars/

I haven't seen the movie so I don't know how the Budget was used.  Looked like mostly effects from the trailers but when I saw "Fury Road", I saw 150 Million Dollars on the screen.  Did "Tomorrowland" really have to be as much as Marvel or Superhero movies?  "San Andres" clocked in at 100 Million and it's a disaster earthquake movie.   Imagine if "Tomorrowland" had that budget, then this weekend isn't as bad.  I just don't see the legs with the lukewarm WOM critically.   I give Disney props for taking risk on original stories and scif.  But Technically "Tomorrowland" is a named brand theme park so it's not like nobody heard of the name.  But I think they need to let the "Let's make a theme park into a movie theme" Go.  I know Pirates is a mega franchise but that's lighting in a bottle.

George Clooney and Hugh Laurie literally monologue themes directly to the audience.

Kids deserve more respect than what Tomorrowland gives them; the preachiness of it is honestly much more condescending than the themes I have been taking issue with.

I am more and more convinced that the San Francisco Bay Area loves sci-fi and that these genre films that underperform nationwide do disproportionately well here.

I know I'm using a reference pool of one showing at one theater, but at Regal Hacienda Crossings (who has one of the real full-size IMAX and occasionally makes the top 20 weekend engagements), my opening night 7pm PLF showing of Pacific Rim basically sold out, my opening night IMAX of Interstellar sold out, and my 7pm of Tomorrowland (in the biggest non-IMAX/non-PLF auditorium) was definitely more full than I expected. And it got a little applause too. Of course, it's opening night, and I have no idea how the rest of the showings sold, either on that day or the rest of the weekend (I do know that I bailed out of a 6:30 of Tomorrowland full of kids, because I didn't realize it was in one of the smaller auditoriums).

Oddly enough, I heard the theater staff talking about how Poltergeist had nobody in it (and surmising that it would fill up with 13 year olds by the time the movie started).

Just interesting.

Yep, Hacienda in top 20 with TL, you also have Metreo with TL & SF Centre 9 with MMFR,

Metreon was huge with PR(#3 Owe)  IS (#1 Owe), Godilla (#2, Hacienda #20), STId (#2, Hacienda #11), Avatar

He isn't blaming them. He's imploring us to not accept them, to not let them become true.

For example, it has been widely accepted in a lot of literature that coral reefs will disappear in our lifetime. Following Tomorrowland's views, we shouldn't accept coral reefs will disappear because it hasn't happened yet. We need to take action and prevent it from happening.

But hey, I can agree to disagree, so to each their own.

The "preachiness" is some of the execution faults the film has. But it really isn't terribly bad.
