You guys, some of you, when a film makes this much money this quickly, it can't sustain the same kind of pace.  If it did, it would gross 800 million and that's not going to happen.  We're all hoping it can pass Titanic.  AOU is locked but to say that the drop is harsh is silly.  500 million in 17 days is a pace that is unheard of.

So wait what?

On christmas no one wants to party but at july 4th everyone does, so strange.

Tbh what's special about July 4th? What holiday is it?

Independence Day.  It's a very big deal in the US and Canada (we have ours on Wednesday)

The difference between Christmas and ID4 is that on Christmas, it's a very family oriented day, obviously.  But once you open gifts, have some turkey and hang with the family for a bit, there's nothing to do and it's also cold in about half the country (in Canada it's cold in about 90% of the country) so movies are a huge option.  It breaks up some of the monotony of the day.

Not to mention the main attraction for the 4th of July happens at night instead during the day.

Pure guess based on 2009:

Monday:  6.4

Tues:  7.36 (+20%)

Wed 5.52 (-25%...losing IMAX and many movies seem to drop harshly on July 1st)

Thurs: 7.45 (big increase because JW is prone to that)

Fri:  11.9 (+60%)

Sat:  7.75 (-35%)

Sun: 9.68 (+25%)

29.33 weekend, 26.73 weekdays...total of 556.46 after Sunday.

Why is t5 and magic mike xxl releasing on a wednesday! Is it a holiday!?

Several reasons.  It's a holiday in Canada and because it's a holiday in the US on the weekend, they hope to get a nice 5 day gross to help mitigate a softer opening due to Saturday.

Figuring out how JW might do this week is difficult because there is no movie to compare it to in 2009.  I mean, there's no movie really to compare this to at all but how do you figure out the trajectory this week?  Hangover? Ice Age, maybe?

It's impossible to say due to what happened last week. Clearly performing more like a weekend movie than we would expect.

Yes, just a small one on July 4th.

They want to have an extra 3 days to make money because July 4 will be very low. Might as well make it a 5 day weekend.

Canadian holidays do go into the marketing strategy too.  It's why a lot of big movies get released on Victoria Day weekend in Canada, which is the weekend before Memorial weekend.
