I wasn't posting on box office forums at the time, but when I saw the first trailer to TDK, I just had a gut feeling it would be a smash. I really liked Batman Begins-it was the first Batman film that I felt did true justice to the character, even though I liked Burton's flicks, and have a real soft spot for the TV show and 1966 movie, which turned me into the rabid movie fan that I am today-and I felt BB's WOM plus the TDK trailer would propel the film to around 320 Million or so. Then Ledger died, which despite being such a tragedy, made the GA very aware of the film. Then the buzz started building-all kinds of early reactions from Hollywood insiders said the film was spectacular, and then I saw trailer 2. I still thought 320-330, but as the early reviews poured in, I was starting to think "This could go to 400 Mil". I never dreamed it would go as high as 530 Million.

And it couldn't have happened to a more deserving movie.

I would much rather have seen Begins do that kind of business. It's still the best live action Batman film IMHO and it's a shame the film was hampered by Schumacher baggage along with a poor marketing campaign by WB. I think if it was the very first serious Batman film (as B89 was), it would have hit over $350m even without the Joker.

I am really not happy about such light-handed written assumptions or allegations or... however that was meant.

Some studios seem to have a tendency to overestimate especially the first weekend (Sunday). If the OW number is rather near to a 'next full number' (like $89m) some studios seem to like to estimate $90m and divide the extra within the first week or...

Why:

reputation, pushing buzz, breaking a former month xy record... helping the film's awareness, implied quality or popularity. Reaching on 1st place,... Winning a 'battle' (do not like that kind of language neither).

Sony is Japanese, maybe some 'not-loosing-face' is a reason (after reading the news about a big company fudging numbers for years bcs of being afraid to loose face and their prime minister (?) speaking about a nation-wide problem)? Or not really knowing some US BO calculation models, having the best sources or...

A lot of reasons are possible, not all has to be intentionally.

There are some interesting analyses to read, a chart for the Sunday over estimates is here to find:

http://boxofficequant.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Estimate-Inflation-By-Studio.png

A chart for 1st weekend, 2nd weekend,... is here to find

http://boxofficequant.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Estimate-Inflation-By-Weekend.png

If the charts would be .jpg I could show them direct, as often as those 'fudging' posts are to read, I'd love to see them in a kind of FAQ for newbes or....

The entry with all the details here

http://boxofficequant.com/actuals-and-estimates-studio-accuracy-in-box-office-prediction/

I think it was TMNT's OW numbers, why those fudging remarks got more frequent, not sure if it was that movie, but I am pretty sure it was in 2014

Thanks for sharing so much.

Jurassic World went up again...awesome! Only down 4% from Monday. Yup, it's crumbling.

It's down 8% from Monday. I think you mean 4% from Wednesday. Down 35% from last Thursday. If it follows last weekend's daily percent changes, it will end up at $7.4m for the weekend.

I also have a difficult time when comparing movies with multiple releases.

For example, imo, in unadjusted grosses, both TA and JW have already passed Titanic

it seems disingenuous to include re-release revenue with original revenue.

It is, but Titanic's original $600m is incredible regardless. Almost 130m admissions. Just an insane performance. None of these big summer action movies of the last 10-15 years are anywhere near the same ballpark. SM1, TDK, TA1, JP4...all of them are around 70m admissions, which is almost 60m behind Titanic. 60m admissions is Spider-Man 2 level of performance just to give perspective.

Seriously, did anyone imagine that The Avengers' domestic total would be surpassed only three years later ( and not by its own sequel )???

This (JW's blockbuster success), to me, is the real evidence of how beloved the first JP is.

I guess it depends on when you ask that question. May 2012? Answer would probably be no. October 30, 2012 when everyone found out Lucasfilm was sold to Disney and there would be a Star Wars 7? At that point I would guess there were already quite a few people here expecting it to be enormous.

Actually, I've always imagined what 1989 what have been like if a movie of the quality of Batman Begins was released instead of what we got(which I love, but could see the flaws from my very first viewing, which was June 23, '89). I think that it would have grossed even more than 250 mil domestically; but, of course, it's hard to really know at this point. Plus, I don't know if two cerebral villains like Ras and Scarecrow would have sold at that time. But I agree that BB is great. I went to see it with a "meh" attitude because I was burned so badly by the other Batman films, and I think I needed a defibrillator by the time it was over. It was an amazing movie. I just think Dark Knight is tighter, and Ledger's Joker and Eckhart's Dent made the film seem even more epic than Begins.

It's hard to say. I believe the Joker adds a lot to a Bat movie's gross. Joker is incredibly popular and has been for many decades. So if you took him out of B89 and replaced him with Ra's/Scarecrow while also giving B89 a much stronger focus on Batman himself, I don't think it could have hit $250m in 1989 dollars. Still though, I have no doubt a brand new Bat franchise in 2005 with no franchise baggage would have gone well over $300m in 2005 dollars. I'm glad it has found a good audience on home video and TV broadcasts over time.

Inside Out (2015)    $1,505,888    -2%    3,263    -381    $462    $312,978,811

$2.3 million Fri (50-55% increase)

$3.2 million Sat (40% increase)

$2.4 million Sun (25% drop)

$7.9 million weekend

Both IO/JW should end up with $7 m+ for the weekend, especially if Pixels/Paper Towns underperform hard. Seeing both in the $7.5 to $8 million range would be excellent.

You have the Dark Knights and the Avengers AOU gross wrong. That's the 35th day gross for TDK, not 42nd. It grossed $982,116 on it's 42nd day. And AOU grossed $630,675.
