Nooooo idea what the IM will be. This is really good and I think it should hit 20m off of it, but could go 3m north or south of that #.

Pretty meh for UNCLE. Bad weekend to open.

Congrats Universal for once again showing how's it's done!!

FF7, Minions, JW and now Compton - all blew expectations out of the water!

Their success this year needs to be really studied - far more than just 'luck' or franchise power. There's way more to it.

EDIT: and PP2 too, forgot about that one too! Their successes are too many to count this year.

It's good marketing matched with huge IPs. Like, 2016 won't be nearly as good for them but it'll still have plenty of hits because they know how to make their movies look good. We've come a long way from 2008.

As per Universal's smarts:

the-wolf-pulp-fiction-lets-not-start-suc

Sure, they have a giant hit on their hands with Compton and that's terrific, but did they really do anything revolutionary this year by having F7 become a monster hit?  Did they contribute to Walker's death and up the curiosity factor?

Did they do anything out of the ordinary when they green lit PP2, after it blew up onj home video?

Did they do anything crazy when they finally made a great JP movie?

And Minions?  Come on guys.

I'm all for giving credit where it is due, but Universal didn't really do anything revolutionary here.

Of course, Disney's late slate still looks a lot bigger

We moving away from the Big Six to THE TWO and then a bunch of small to big distributors.

I mean, the highest non-Disney/Uni film this summer will come in seventh (MI5).

Watch when next year when Universal goes down in gross people will say they suck. Its just the movie slate for this year worked well for them.

For that movie I can't wait.... but I am also hoping for Bridge of Spies

Still haven't seen Ant-Man

Non-Disney movies I want to see in a cinema this year:

Black Mass, Martian, Spectre, Finest Hours, Macbeth (version no.? for me)

Universal's slate for the rest of the year isn't as good but TBH I imagine after a fantastic summer and Spring, they can afford to have a breather.

It's interesting that although the expected tentpoles like Jurassic World, Furious 7, Minions etc have all done great it's the lower budget films like Trainwreck, Compton etc that have also done well too, doesn't that show that the mid budget films which studios have supposedly stopped making are still viable

FF7 was 2014.

FF7 was originally 2014, so was 50 Shades, so was Jurassic World (Minions was considered for 2014 initially as well). Due to a number of factors, Universal basically got all their heavy hitters into 2015, and all their heavy hitters at the peak of their powers.

FF7 was 2014.

Actually FF7 was 2015.

It never goes by when it was filmed or slated to come out, it goes by when it came out.

I'd add in Warner Brothers, they're going to have a great year in 2016.
