5TH UPDATE, Sunday, 12:08AM:

Coming off of A- CinemaScores, Sony’s Hotel Transylvania 2 and Warner Bros.’ femme demo flick The Intern saw upticks in their Saturday business over Friday with respective surges of +57% and +23%.

HT2 took in an estimated $20.85M moving its FSS to $47.4M-$48.4M, which would mean all-time opening records for the month of September (beating HT1’s $42.5M), Sony Animation, not to mention, it’s the best opening Sony has seen so far this year.

Today’s haul is also the highest single day ever in September besting the opening day of 2013’s Insidious Chapter 2 ($20.23M).

The Intern made $7.65M on Saturday, repping a 23% hike over Friday. The opening weekend for Nancy Meyers’ workplace comedy is at an estimated $18.44M, still above Warner Bros.’ mid-teen projections for the film

Universal-Walden Media-Cross Creek-Working Title’s (pant pant pant, running out of breath) Everest grossed an estimated $5.88M, +47% over its second Friday for a second FSS at 3,006 theaters of $13.7M and a 10-day cume of $23.7M.

I wonder if there's a chance for Sicario to break out with over 20m next week. It is doing stellar in limited release and looks like the most mainstream friendly Villeneuve project yet.

$15m definitely looks possible if it expands in 2500 theaters or thereabouts.
