mother! | 09.15.17 | Paramount | Darren Aronofsky, Jennifer Lawrence | Razzie Awards frontrunner

2017 can officially start, people.

Ladies & Gentlemen, start your engines.

Jóhann Jóhannsson, on Mother!

“I was thrilled when Darren contacted me at the Toronto film festival last year and wanted to have coffee,” he wrote in an email to FACT.

“He told me about a couple of projects he was planning and had just seen Sicario and loved the film and the music. Then, a few months later, he sent me the script for his new film, which was the boldest and most exciting script I’d read in a long time. It was not a difficult decision to accept the job.

“Darren has one of the most individual and characterful voices in American cinema today and I’ve been a fan of his work for years. A true auteur and a very generous and inspiring collaborator. I consider myself very fortunate to be able to work with directors of the caliber of Darren and Denis Villeneuve, with whom I’m collaborating now on Blade Runner 2049.”

discusses Oscar potentials for next year and has this to say about mother!

Quote

MOTHER!

Director and writer:  Darren Aronofksy
Other crew names:  Jóhan Jóhansson (music), Matthew Lebatique (director of photography, 'Black Swan'), Andrew Weisblum (editing, 'Black Swan'),
Cast:   Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Domhnall Gleeson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Harris, Brian Gleeson

The succession of names behind and in front of the cameras in the director's new work of 'Black Swan' and 'The Fighter' is simply dazzling. Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem star in 'Mother!' , A drama with elements of psychological thriller in which give life to a couple that sees how their relation is put to test with the visit of a series of unexpected guests. Domhnall Gleeson and Ed Harris appear in supporting roles, although all eyes will be on Michelle Pfeiffer , a Hollywood survivor who, after 25 years of her third and final Oscar nomination, may have the opportunity to make amends for the unrealized statuette For his work on 'The Fabulous Baker Boys'. 'Mother!' Opens in Spain on 12 October.

that is via Google translate..  Those of you who speak Spanish fluently might prefer to read it in the original, at the link.

After Joy and Passengers, I'm not interested.

Not sure what those 2 movies have to do or have in common with the next Aronofsky ? It is not like actor's have much to do with a movie quality.

The script isn't the only thing that makes a movie bad or good.  I've seen very good scripts be ruined by a poorly conceived production.  I've also seen very bad scripts, be elevated by a great director.   Many things influence quality.

She did that with every movie she was in. If you hated all of them, your logic makes sense.

Regardless, if you don't want to see movies she is in, you don't need a reason.  Personally, I'm glad that she was seen as one of the brightest spots of Passengers, and of course, that she was nominated for an Oscar in Joy.  After the guy directed her to two Oscar nominations and a win, do you think it is likely any actress would have turned DOR down for that?  Besides, he wrote the script as he went, as I understand it.  And it was one of the performances of hers I like most, so I am happy she did it, in any event.  Tastes differ, of course.

Joy has been so far my favourite JLaw performance for me I thought it wonderfully grounded and measured. I hadn't realise it was so divisive until she was nominated for the Oscar and seeing some of the posts on IMDb.

From the few snippets I've read about mother! Makes it sound very interesting and extremely odd. I wonder when Paramount will release a trailer for it if it's out in October?

I understand Aronofsky often opens his films at festivals, particularly the Venice Film Festival. If it is going to open then, I hope a trailer might come out earlier than later.  I don't know when Black Swan's trailer came out in respect to its first screening, though.

Do we assume this is a wide release in October?  If so, then I have to wonder if he is going to go to a festival with a jury.  He may just do TIFF, he's done TIFF before.  Also, they don't seem like they are even doing an awards run with this movie, as normally those are platform releases, which he did with the Wrestler and Swan.

If this is kind of a horror movie, which is what we're hearing, then they may just play it like a horror movie and wide release it.  It could do very well at the box office, if it's any good at all.
