I think what happened rather was that Hollywood started seeing more benefit in pushing their intended mega-tentpoles to the weeks before July 4th (see Transformers 2 & 4, IDR, Despicable Me 3, Jurassic World 2 etc.) to get a head start and lesser films started crowding the weekend as they had few other places to go.

Anyways thats great for The Purge. The Conjuring 2 did $16.3M its opening Friday so The Purge is right on that.

Those numbers for Tarzan, and BFG aren't really good, in fact they're bad, but relative to expectations they're not that bad.
