2nd UPDATE, 11:44 AM: No surprises this weekend so far in early box office returns as Universal’s Jason Bourne may end the day with around $21M (that would include the $4.3M from last nights previews) and is on track for a $57M gross so far. It is very early yet so depending on this evening’s shows, it has a shot at $60M for director Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon.

Bad Moms, like we mentioned earlier today, has a potential of $30M and early results are showing a $12M day (including the $2M from previews) for a possible $33M three-day run. However, we must caution that later tonight and tomorrow will really be key as group and advanced ticket sales kick in early and the R-rated STX Entertainment film must sustain that momentum through tonight and tomorrow. It’s a great start to a very funny comedy that is bound to have strong legs.

The other newcomer Nerve launched on Tuesday with $1M and in three days has made $6M. It’s on track for a $2.5M day (including the $2M from Thursday night grosses) and a debut of probably around $15M. It’s a PG-13 rated film from Lionsgate and really caters almost entirely to the young female demo.

C'mon 60 m.

Daddy needs some casino points.

Going all in for Suicide Squad.

Wait wait wait. 2.5 for nerve would be pretty bad for today as it is. But that INCLUDES 2M from yesterday? No way. Waiting for you guys @Rth @nilephelan. You're my only hope.

The Thur thread has  Nerve at $2.3m - presumably from Nilephelen  Even with a $2.5 Friday that would be a mere 8% rise - that doesn't make any sense either

That is the problem, it is didn't bored me. It was stupid and dumb and hilarious from start to finish.

I doubt I'll have that same reaction, although some of what I've heard of the film does sound hilarious from an incompetent movie making standpoint.

Anything over 130 m DOM is a win for M7.

Denzel movies rarely go that high.

I wonder how it will do overseas. Black stars typically don't pull in huge numbers OS.

Westerns aren't very popular either, so at best 90m.

The Accountant has 1M on the WB posted trailer from 2 days ago, and 550k on WB UK. The Storks trailer actually has almost more views than the Storks teaser (should beat it soon), that is pretty good TBH.

I think the first view is the most important.  I know that I don't always want to see later trailers for movies I already know I am going to, so I won't spoil it.

Still, out of that list, only Mag7, The Accountant and maybe Girl on the Train interest me much. .... Ooops!  And Peregrine if it sounds good.

You know, I wouldn't actually be surprised if Storks beats Magnificent 7 on OW. Storks will be the first big animated release for 6 weeks and the only one for 6 weeks as well. I can see both movies opening to around 30-35M.

At this point I wouldn't be surprised by anything with animated films, although I'll be seeing M7 that weekend myself.  I've decided I have no feel at all for box office on animated films.   I knew Dory would do well, but it did WAY better than I ever expected.  I never saw Pets doing what it did so close to Dory.   Moana is the only one left this year that interests me, but so far almost all have done well, and as you say, there will be a brief dearth of them at that time.

Universal's Jason Bourne is on course to win the North American weekend box-office race with $55 million-plus from 4,026 theaters, according to early Friday returns. That would easily best the $38.1 million opening of the last film in the spy action series, The Bourne Legacy, which starred Jeremy Renner, but come behind the $69 debut of The Bourne Ultimatum, featuring Damon.

Based on matinee business, the male-skewing movie could gross north of $20 million on Friday alone, including $4.2 million in Thursday-night previews.

STX Entertainment's Bad Moms is also impressing. The R-rated pic, which earned $2 million Thursday night, is pacing earn $33 million for the weekend from 3,215 locations in a needed boost for R-rated comedies.

Bad Moms was directed and written by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, and follows a trio of overworked and under-appreciated moms who embark on an adventure of freedom and self-indulgence.

And finally, Nerve, Lionsgate's thriller starring Emma Roberts and Dave Franco is expected to gross a strong $15 million over its five-day debut after hitting theaters Wednesday. It earned another $2.3 million at 2,538 locations Thursday, bringing the total to $6 million since Wednesday.
