Why was The Amazing Spider-man 2 considered a disappointment and movies like Fantastic Beasts and Dr. Strange considered hits.

Won't they all gross around the same (650-750 m)?

Was it TASM 2's budget that doomed the series?

Besides the fact that it cost way more than those two, Sony doesn't even have the merchandise rights for Spider-Man.

Also, Sony only has the movie rights.

And the reception for the movie was worse than the first but still, I agree with Grey Ghost, the narrative that ASM2 was a failure always seemed a bit incorrect to me, it was a very decent gross even with that insane budget.

I think some leaked Sony e-mails suggest they thought the movie was hoped to be a 1B WW grosser.

It failed enough for Sony to scrap the planned ASM sequels and associsted expanded Spider-man universe.

The 3 first Spiderman s movies would be 1,2 B WW affairs circa mid 2010's.

Those movies were gigantic , some of the biggest superhero movies of all time with the Avengers & The Dark Knights.

The charts were stuffed with Potter,  LOTR,  and Pirates films by the time that Spider-man 3 released, but I am pretty sure that the first Spider-man was solidly in the top 10 of all time worldwide by the end of 2002.

Spider-man is the most popular superhero of all time.

Even mediocre movie like The Amazing Spider-Man 1&2 made more than 700M+ worldwide.

Hopefully this new upcoming Spider-Man movie makes more than 800M.

And hopefully Marvel also can keep the budget down to around 180-200 mill plus P&A

I've got a top ten too...but does it count if it's not in any firm order yet?

  • Queen of Katwe
  • Moana
  • Zootopia
  • Hunt for the Wilderpeople
  • 10 Cloverfield Lane
  • Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders
  • Kubo
  • Finding Dory

These are definitely lower but I liked them so w/e

  • Trolls
  • TMNT Out of the Shadows

What's so depressing about it?

guess he hated it. cool. i'm looking forward to months of futurist repeating whatever vague condescending nonsense criticism he can come up with over and over again whenever someone says something good about it. pretty much the routine at this point.
