I'm taking names of everyone who snarked at my claim that FB is going to whip Moana DOM.  Especially those who chimed in yesterday after Moana's $15.7m Wednesday.

You are high on that list. :)

I guess that will make it easier to congratulate everyone on being correct?

Does anyone know why these animated and family movies started decreasing by around 25-35% on Thanksgiving day? Looking back in the nineties Toy Story went up 7% today, A Bug's Life over 40%, and TS2 over 30%. Admittedly the Friday increase was a lot smaller for those than modern animated flicks usually get.

For non thanksgiving openers, in 2000 The Grinch went up as well as Monsters Inc in 2001.

maybe the multiplexes decided to hold up those family options till Friday and give lesser showtimes on an actual Thanksgiving? interesting observation!

DHD on ALLIED versus ARRIVAL

Despite the fact that Paramount’s  Allied is expected to inch out Arrival$16.8M to $15.1M, it’s the later film that’s doing better in its third weekend. The Amy Adams film has caught on with a three-day that’s expected to be down -12%. Next to its $85M production cost, Allied‘s start isn’t strong enough. Paramount thinks it could get to $18M in five. If that happens, it’s not that far from Bridge of Spies over that same time span ($18.6m). But Allied is not Bridge of Spies  in cost ($40M), reviews or audience reaction, so its legs are apt to be impacted. That Steven Spielberg Cold War drama earned an A CinemaScore, 91% fresh Rotten Tomatoes reviews and a final domestic of $72.3M. Allied is battling a B grade and a 66% middling fresh rating in a Moana-Fantastic Beasts world. Did we mention it’s Pitt’s third WWII movie in seven years after Inglorious Basterds ($38M opening) and Fury ($23.7M FSS)? Distribution chiefs often say that glossy magazine affairs don’t impact the average moviegoer’s decision to buy a ticket to a certain star’s movie, so in that regard, Pitt’s pending divorce from Angelina Jolie would be a factor.

DHD on ALLIED versus ARRIVAL

Did we mention it’s Pitt’s third WWII movie in seven years after Inglorious Basterds ($38M opening) and Fury ($23.7M FSS)? Distribution chiefs often say that glossy magazine affairs don’t impact the average moviegoer’s decision to buy a ticket to a certain star’s movie, so in that regard, Pitt’s pending divorce from Angelina Jolie would be a factor.

oh yeah...! I've never thought about it before but come to think of it Pitt keeps getting cast as some WW2 veteran does feel a little overdone. Like, star in something contemporary, please! That Moneyball role was good, wasn't it?

I don't get Trolls' drop. I just don't. Competition, sure, but Megamind dropped 21% against Tangled (24% on Thursday), Puss in Boots dropped 30% against three PG-rated openers that combined for $53m (3-day), Wreck-It Ralph dropped 10% against two PG openers with $46m combined, and Peanuts (which had shit legs overall) dropped 26% against TGD. Trolls is collapsing as if this was any regular weekend.

somehow all the other family options did too, even Moana fell 37% (well technically more like 24.4% but still) and Kubo, Dory and Pete all fell 50%.

Wow, FB's drop is only 12.7%. That's extremely good. After a somewhat muted Wednesday increase, FB is doing better than the THG releases for it's 1st Thursday.

THG:CF - 28.1%

MJ1 - 24.2%

MJ2 - 24.5%

O/WE it skewed older than the Harry Potters so it makes sense it dipped less than more children/family attended Potters

Looks like @Chewy was wrong about Fogler's reception in Fantastic Beasts.

Fogler was awesome in the movie. His story arc was easily the best realized one and his performance was really good. The Farrell character really needed some tweaking, especially considering how his arc ends.

Decided I'm actually going to apply to UBC hopefully for scholarship admission. Issue is the deadline is December 1st, so depending on how the application process goes, I may have to wait till sometime during the week to see Moana :(

If tonight is extremely productive than maybe tomorrow night I'll try to catch a show.
