All the people I've talked to about upcoming movies have talked about how much they want to see Hidden Figures when it goes wide.  They didn't know the title of the movie, but said, "Hey, I really want to see that film with the three women who worked for NASA."  They said the trailers really resonated with them.  Even kids in my school want to see that film.

yep I said from the beginning it would be a hit. The trailers were kinda cheesy but they did a good job of selling the movie

Word has spread about "problematic" twist and people are flocking to theaters to see it. :)

The critic mob reaction to that 'problematic' twist legitimately makes me wonder how they ever made

Spoiler

Beauty and the Beast and even (shudders) let children see it!  And they're even doing a remake!!

Eh, not the same.

A consensus of opinion that differs from your own does not constitute "a mob".

That would mean more like $26,5m for RO on CD.

Hidden Figures is this year's crowd-pleasing mainstream Best Picture nominee. It'll be nice to have another one of the Big 6 studios represented other than Paramount since the rest are looking to sit on the sidelines in favor of newer indie studios and a mini-major (Lionsgate).

Strange Hidden Figures isn't being distributed by Fox Searchlight but Fox itself since it seems more their sort of film.

I wouldn't be surprised if WB snucks in with Sully.

.... Because Rogue One is pulling in numbers that would be jaw-dropping by almost any other standard.

The Star Wars prequel/stand-alone adventure earned another $64.4 million in its second Fri-Sun frame, a drop around 58% from last weekend’s boffo $155m debut. That’s a slightly larger second-weekend drop than (deep breath) I Am Legend, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Scream 2, and Tron: Legacy, but not by an earthshaking amount. The Gareth Edwards-directed (with help from Tony Gilroy) sci-fi thriller will cross the $300 million mark today, on its 11th day of release.

Its $26 million Christmas day gross is the second-biggest in history, ...

Its 10-day $286 million cume is the eighth-biggest of all time, while said 11-day $300m dash is the sixth-fastest in history. The estimated $318m 11-day total is the sixth-biggest ever,....

And it probably has at least another week of larger-than-normal weekday grosses t... Sure, the $64.4 million second-weekend gross is merely the 14th biggest second-weekend gross ever, ...It will likely end tomorrow just over the $325m gross of Suicide Squad and just over/under the $330m gross of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (sorry, Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc.).

By the of the week, if not the start of the weekend, it will have out-grossed every Harry Potter movie and every Lord of the Rings/Hobbit movie with its sights set on the first two Hunger Games films and the likes of Star Wars and The Phantom Menace.

...

...yadda yadda TFA  If Rogue One performs accordingly, we’re looking at a mere $52.41m Mon-Thurs gross.

Of course, since Rogue One made around $32 million today (???), there is a reasonable chance that Rogue One will earn more this week than it did last week, like maybe 62% more. That’s what Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows pulled off over the Christmas break in 2011. It’s not an exact comparison (the Robert Downey Jr. vs. Jared Harris sequel fell just 48% in weekend two), but it gives us some ballpark possibilities. To wit, if Rogue One ends up with “just” 50% more this week compared to last week, we’re looking at a $100 million Mon-Thurs gross and a $386m 14-day total heading into the third weekend of release.

With Tom Hanks looking to be a no-show at all of the other major awards (places that nominated him in 2013 that made his snub at the Oscars all the more surprising), I really don't see a path for it anymore.

True but the Academy might surprise and nominate him, the film and Eastwood. It's a good film but TBH i didn't it was awards worthy.
