Meh... don't understand that $18M. How does something like that make any sense?! Like how can Tuesday be better than Friday when everyone is off Friday night for the weekend?! It just doesn't seem logical. Usually the box office at least feels fairly predictable and logical to an extent. This one baffles me.

Dr Strange was another run of the mill Marvel movie. Adequate but forgettable. As for Ghostbusters? One of the greatest atrocities in the history of Hollywood. Batman & Robin at least has that so-bad-it's-good factor going for it. Ghostbusters was just an endless pile of crude, unfunny, noisy garbage.

I think you mix up the tomatoemeter with the ratings for a film.

The % stand for: is a film enjoyable or not. Sometimes they give a rating that lets you assume the film is not enjoyable, but some of them still gave that additional qualifier, and sometimes it gets above the middle-ground ratings and still a rotten for not being enjoyable. Per reviewer.

= what you get to see is the sum/average of the reviewers enjoyable qualifier/ratings

It should be presented IMHO as rating / qualifier of the enjoyment. Maybe.

Ghostbusters 2016 got an average rating of 6.5/10. That is a bit above the middle, and 70% of the reviewers thought it to be still enjoyable. Means 30% of them shared your opinion, 70% did not share your opinion.

Humor is a strange thing in general, and has huge differences not only within the same cultural surrounding, but even more so from region to region. Then there is the generation difference, what is humorous is not set in stone. In my experience, what I found funny lets say 30 years back might today not be seen as funny or the other way around. It develops within societies. Similar to what is 'beautiful'. See Rembrandt or the Gallery of the Beauties https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallery_of_Beauties = not how we perceive today beauty.

Or worse: gets killed in translation.

Humour is in my POV the most ... personal bias thing, the least one 'judge-able' in a world-spanning way of all the criteria we usually use to 'judge'and/or categorise a book, film, comic, or TV-series ... and as such always open to discussion especially about a comedy. In my POV.

Rogue One has already burnt out lots of demand. It's now hairs away from $400M. This would be my guess at least. Sing is also proving a real juggernaut, it definitely must have taken some business away from Rogue One. Hopefully, R1 can demonstrate good legs beyond the holidays since it will be the only real fantasy/blockbuster out there for the next few weeks or so.

Because both were way better than BvS? Seriously, Ghostbusters is criminally underrated on these boards, it's insanely funny at parts, and just plain entertaining throughout.

It was decent, nothing more. Kate McKinnon had most of the best lines as most probably assumed she would. Way better than BvS though? Nah. Especially having now seen the Directors Cut of BvS.

13% jump for Sing. 9% for R1. Looking at 2011 was expecting +5-10% for Sing and +20-25% for R1.

Great for Sing. Moana (which itself has done and is looking to carry on great) will go down unless Sing falls big post holidays.

As R1 goes, what it does and does not do won't matter much. It's looking to cross 550 (>3.5x) which is more than what folks were willing to give it 10 days back.

24.5% bump (5.8) for Pass taking it to 51. Girl With the Dragon Tattoo did 5.3 taking it to 46. It ended with 110. So 100 is very likely for Pass considering it's been consistently ahead so far.

I understand what RT-meter is perfectly well. What nobody can explain is why so many poor or middling superhero movies and other similar fantasy fare got a much fresher score than BvS? How can Marvel have produced 14 movies straight, all being fresh, most emphatically so. And there were some clunkers in there for sure! Some great ones too! As for Ghostbusters, I cannot accept any relativistic argument with that one. I can understand why one may prefer Vertigo to Psycho or the other way round, or Speed to Die Hard and vice versa, or Aliens/Alien etc... When two films are of similar quality then OK, then personal preferences and idiosyncrasies kick in. I can also understand some art-house unconventional films that may be divisive (David Lynch, Coens, Polanski, von Trier etc) But having people making excuses for Ghostbusters is just absurd! But I will tell you what is behind the defense of of the indefensible Ghostbusters. Many critics and audiences, were aghast that many misogynists (and yes, there are such people) went after that movie and tried to create a lot of negative buzz around it. Under this light, many critics felt the need to make a moral/ideological stand and prevent the misogynists from claiming victory. The issue is not about the film itself (a towering atrocity) but about ideological trench warfare and morals. That is my interpretation of this issue. Unfortunately, similar tendencies can be observed with other films and other cultural spheres. Anyway, this is a huge matter and I am now quite tired.

I still enjoy Despicable Me immensely. But I rather watch paint dry than subject myself to DM2 or Lorax again (I didn't know animation can be sooo boring before those offenders)

Minions were silly and mediocre but it's harmless. Haven't seen SLOP.

Not gonna lie, that RO number is a bit disappointing. Was expecting 20m+. Maybe it'll balance out with a soft drop today, but I'm not sure. Sing is turning into a true monster, though. Wow.

Agreed. So far every time I've been bummed by a Rogue One number it quickly turned things around, so here's hoping right?

Illumination gets big numbers because they saturate public awareness by slapping their upcoming releases on everything.  In marketing, recognition is everything.  Their tactic is to take something that's okay to moderately good (but unlikely to put off people) and then market the shit out of it until you can't help  but be aware of it.  It works even better with kid movies because kids will drag their parents to see stuff.

Some of those films may be objectively bad and completely unoriginal but they are harmless! See Home Alone 2 as an example. It was completely PANNED by critics and rightfully so considering how unoriginal it was but you will find no kid that won't enjoy this. Just because it is funny...

So If you ask kids about these movies, they will tell you how much they enjoyed them. Isn't that what matters?
