“Well I don’t want to give you spoilers but we were really interested in what happens to that boy who’s in the meta story in the first movie when he’s four years older. When he’s an adolescent how does that change his point of view? And it’s nice to have the characters start in a different place from the first movie. Emmet, for example, was in an existential crisis of having seen another dimension and was questioning the whole point of his existence.”

Lord Miller reaffirm they aren't directing

Ninjago seems like a movie that was in development for a while and they then realized they could retrofit it into this new franchise and double the gross. I'm expecting only some tentative connections between that and the rest of the franchise.

Speaking as someone who has no experience in animation, I'm obviously an expert.  Directing animation is different(like completely different), but to me it seems like it's probably a little easier.  You make sure the story is right and the voice acting is where you want it and then oversee what the animators are doing.  They are the ones that are doing all the heavy lifting anyway, right?  You can tweak little things to make it just right and continue to mold it as it goes along.

Check this video from about 22 minutes onward. It gives a look into how an animated movie is made. This is the bullet points version shown at Universal Studios (in a pretty entertaining stage show)
