The Equalizer is selling really well here too. It was probably a good idea to open these movies (Mamma Mia 2 and The Equalizer 2) on the same weekend as they can easily co-exist despite targeting the same audience of older adults.

Its a great night for couples that like to sleep in separate bedrooms

Or great double bills, one for him and one for her.

But he might not want her there when he's singing and dancing along to Mamma Mia 2

EDIT: Also why the heteronormativity? :redcapes:

It is probably smart for Focus to go wide with BlackKkKlansman on August 10th to be honest.

It's opening in 600 theaters that weekend I believe. I imagine it hits 2k theaters within two weeks, and if it's doing really well, it could get into 3k like Wind River (maybe not though because rural appeal will probably be limited)

I support your Sequalizer Over Mamma Mia club. Denzel FTW

Well, I don't have a club. Probably too late to create one

But yeah, based on what I'm seeing at my theater, these two are neck and neck right now with The Equalizer having a one ticket advantage for the night.

Interesting. And i think you said you live in an old people city, right? Mamma Mia should be doing better. Altho Denzel appeals to old people too. hmmm

Mama Mia now has a 3rd showing (in the 9pm hour) and Equalizer has a 4th showing (in the 11pm hour) at my Regal local...I'll try to see if they get more as the day goes by:)...

PS - Ant Man did lose the 11pm - not sure who lost the 9pm:)...

PPS - Equalizer has virtually sold out its 4pm - only 8 seats left with 13 minutes to showtime...

So, Mama Mia has now also gotten an 8pm show, so it's up to 4 at Regal, too...(22/50 seats already sold for it, after virtually selling out 7pm)...

And Cinemark's show is over 82 seats sold with 25 minutes to go to showtime (it's a 7:15pm)...it's really sold here quickly...

7:00 shows:

The Equalizer 2: 53/113 (83/226 Total)

Mamma Mia!: 50/78 (68/145 Total)

Unfriended: 11/78

Unfriended's running at two thirds of Upgrade (3.1M). The late show probably won't change much. Strong numbers for Equalizer and Mamma Mia! though

Fandango.com is reporting the film (Mamma Mia 2) is not only outpacing The Greatest Showman, but is actually outpacing Pitch Perfect 2, the latter of which opened with a monstrous $69.2 million.

Yeah, neither of these are good comps lol. One is a holiday movie that was initially a bomb, and the other was three years ago and less presales based.

Greatest Showman opened to 24M 5-day. Pitch Perfect 2 might as well be a different era of presales in 2015. I'm thinking 40M+ for Mamma Mia 2, but the fandango comps are meant to sound like good PR, not necessarily reflect reality.

How tomorrow looks at my theater:

Spoiler

Mamma Mia!:

10:45: 57/124

12:20: 18/69

1:30: 20/124

3:05: 11/69

4:15: 29/124

7:00: 37/124

9:50: 15/78

The Equalizer 2:

10:00: 29/78

10:45: 21/67

1:00: 18/78

4:00: 10/78

7:00: 17/78

8:30: 4/69

10:00: 0/78

Mamma Mia!: 187/712

The Equalizer 2: 99/526

Unfriended has sold nothing.

FWIW The Equalizer is trailing Mamma Mia! by a similar amount as this morning for previews (53% vs 58%), and it's looking at a decent total ahead of MM tonight. Either way, these are strong sales for both

Mamma Mia! comps:

180% of Ocean's 8 (74.2M)

185% of Wonder (50.9M)

220% of The Post (42.7M)

250% of Orient Express (71.8M)

267% of Girls Trip (83.3M)

300% of Book Club (40.8M)

345% of Pitch Perfect 3 (68.7M)

There isn't a perfect comp for this, but based on how it's performing in previews, The Post and Book Club are probably the best comparisons.

Equalizer:

30% of Deadpool 2 (37.7M)

115% of Dunkirk (58.1M)

170% of Pacific Rim: Uprising (47.8M)

230% of 12 Strong (36.3M)

230% of Death Wish (29.9M)

250% of Sicario 2 (47.5M)

285% of The Commuter (39M)

330% of Atomic Blonde (60.4M)

367% of American Made (61.7M)

This is very strong. IT'S GO TIME

Final Unfriended previews:

7:00: 11/78

9:25: 7/78

Total: 18/78

Comps with the late show using PTAs:

20% of A Quiet Place (4.2M)

45% of Jigsaw (3.9M)

55% of Happy Death Day (7M)

55% of Insidious 4 (8.1M)

60% of Truth or Dare (5.4M)

65% of Annihilation (5.5M)

80% of Hereditary (5.7M)

105% of Upgrade (4.9M) (this only had one more theater than Unfriended lol)

130% of Strangers 2 (8.5M)

300% of Unsane (8.1M)

Comps without the late show (where applicable; if anything above had multiple shows, they won't be compared here):

30% of Jigsaw (2.6M)

33% of Insidious 4 (4.8M)

35% of Happy Death Day (4.5M)

40% of Annihilation (3.4M)

40% of Truth or Dare (3.6M)

50% of Hereditary (3.5M)

65% of Upgrade (3.1M)

80% of Strangers 2 (4.9M)

Final Mamma Mia sales:

6:35: 18/67

7:00: 50/78

7:30: 15/69

9:50: 6/78

Total: 89/292

Comps:

100% of I Can Only Imagine (34.8M using the PTA)

120% of Pitch Perfect 3 (23.9M)

125% of Orient Express (35.9M)

140% of Ocean's 8 (57.7M)

220% of Wonder (60.5M)

240% of Adrift (27.8M)

245% of The Post (47.5M)

285% of Book Club (38.8M)

Again, there isn't a perfect comp, but this has a wide amount of numbers

Final Equalizer sales:

4:00: 33/113

7:00: 53/113

10:00: 15/113

Total: 101/339

Comps with the 4 PM show:

23% of Deadpool 2 (28.9M)

85% of Pacific Rim: Uprising (23.9M)

315% of 12 Strong (49.8M)

315% of Sicario 2 (59.9M)

350% of Hostiles (35.4M)

390% of The Commuter (53M)

390% of Death Wish (50.7M)

Comps without the 4 PM show:

210% of 12 Strong (33.2M)

210% of Sicario 2 (39.9M)

230% of Hostiles (23.2M)

260% of The Commuter (35.6M)

260% of Death Wish (33.8M)

This supports many different numbers
