Hollywood Reporter:

Mamma Mia: $30-35M with Universal expecting $27M (lmfao they really want those "surprise!" headlines, do they?)

Equalizer: $25M or more

Unfriended: $6M+

That sounds pessimistic for phenomenon Mama Mia! and optimistic for Unfriended...

Tonight's sales:)

1st local (Cinemark - did not book MM2 until Wed morning - very last minute presale)

Mama Mia (4 showings) - 59/175, 4/60, 6/175, 0/60 for 69/470 (seems not great, but for only 24 hours, I think pretty darn good:)

Equalizer 2 (3 showings) - 8/175, 23/175, 10/175 for 41/525 (this is not great here:)...

2nd local (Regal)

Mama Mia (2 showings - it's getting a 3rd or 4th b/c 1st showing is already a virtual sellout...they just haven't posted yet) - 81/90, 56/90 for 137/180 (this is rockin' here:)

Equalizer 2 (3 showings - this is almost as good, so it's gonna fight for an extra showing, too) - 38/70, 51/70, 20/70 for 109/210 (not quite Mamma Mia pace, but close)

Unfriended (2 showings) - 2/50, 3/50 for 5/100 - not great, but at least it's sold something

So, there you have tonight's sales...

PS - I know I didn't post theater sets...but the big loser was Ant Man and the old late June through July 4th movies not named Incredibles and JWFK (both kept their small screens in full) - Ant Man dropped to 1 screen at one local (Cinemark) and 2 at the other (Regal) - and I expect the Regal to steal a lot of those showings on the 2nd screen since it's selling both big openers well:)...

Mamma Mia 2 369 1786 20.66%
The Sequelizer 415 1725 24.06%

Mamma Mia Comps:

140% of Bad Moms 2 ($23.4M)

140% of Orient Express ($40.1M)

288% of Greatest Showman ($25.4M)

221% of Pitch Perfect 3 ($44M)

27% of Fifty Shades Freed ($10.4M)

236% of Life of the Party ($42.3M)

410% of Book Club ($55.7M)

162% of Ocean's 8 ($67.3M)

I don't expect it to reach Book Club or Ocean's, but somewhere around the $40M range sounds just about right, and would obviously be fantastic.

Sequelizer Comps:

29% of Justice League ($27.2M)

116% of Proud Mary ($11.6M)

268% of Den of Thieves ($40.7M)

97% of Breaking In ($17.1M)

25% of Deadpool 2 ($30.9M)

38% of Solo ($32.5M)

399% of Superfly ($27.4M)

30% of Jurassic World 2 ($45M)

269% of Uncle Drew ($41.1M)

62% of Ant-Man 2 ($47.3M)

The Deadpool/Solo comps seem the most accurate, given how well black-led movies sell at my theater, and would also be fantastic.

Should be a fun weekend regardless.

Mama Mia now has a 3rd showing (in the 9pm hour) and Equalizer has a 4th showing (in the 11pm hour) at my Regal local...I'll try to see if they get more as the day goes by:)...

PS - Ant Man did lose the 11pm - not sure who lost the 9pm:)...

PPS - Equalizer has virtually sold out its 4pm - only 8 seats left with 13 minutes to showtime...

The Equalizer is selling really well here too. It was probably a good idea to open these movies (Mamma Mia 2 and The Equalizer 2) on the same weekend as they can easily co-exist despite targeting the same audience of older adults.

I said this on Telegram but pre-sales at my theatre for tonight indicate something like 9M previews, so I wouldn't be surprised if the number tomorrow morning comes out at like 6 or more

Doesn't that put something like $60m+ OW on the cards...

Or are we expecting this to be super frontloaded? 🤔

I don't see the reason for it to be veryyy frontloaded. Yes, it's a sequel but it's also a romantic comedy targeting older audiences.

I honestly have no idea. Pre-sales seem incredibly strong overall according to everyone's reports and not to mention MT data. It's not going to be another Fault in Our Stars in terms of front-loaded weekends, but if 6M previews does happen, I'd still stay closer to 50 than 60M. Then again, even if it does 'only' 4M, I still wouldn't rule out 50M.

Wait is there even a debate about Mamma Mia debuting at #1?

I'm fully expecting to hear a news report on Sunday night that they found some teen in Florida in a ditch all beaten up (by himself) and his last words before passing out are "but...but...The Equalizer 2 will open at #1!"
