Something to consider

....Girls Trip started showtimes at 7PM, while Valerian started at 5PM...

(deadline's article)

That makes sub-20 still on cards for Val

Interstellar had Matthew McConaughey fresh from his Oscar win, Dunkirk doesn't have nearly as much star power.

Yeah, Interstellar had post-Oscar/post-True Detective McConaughey but it also had other big names like Hathaway, Chastain, etc. That Dunkirk is looking to open in the same range is more of a statement of Nolan's drawing power.

Among those films in regular release, Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming was the No. 1 film for the third day in a row with $4,45M beating 20th Century Fox’s War for the Planet of the Apes which made $3.7M in second

Hmmm I don't think drama is the right word. But yes, WW2 movie with no American or Chinese character seems like a very tough sale to make.

Nolan basically described it as a British film with an American budget.

War dramas are an easier sell than something like Interstellar in my opinion.

Only when they have big stars (see: American Sniper, Fury) or are Oscar players. If you turn to BOM, you'll see the war genre is littered with flops.

9% drop for SMH and 16% drop for Apes. Ouch in particular for Apes.

Jesus Apes... Spider has stabilized a bit since Monday. That would be another sub-50% week to week drop.

Well they don't typically get made on the scale of Dunkirk these days now do they

11% drop for SMH and 16% drop for Apes. Looks like a 22M weekend for SMH and a hilariously awful fall for Apes into sub-20M

I do wonder if Nolan will do a small scale project more akin to say Lincoln or Munich? He's great at doing the big scale films but something on a smaller scale could be more of a challenge. I still want a Nolan directed gangster film or a biopic.
