STEPHEN KING'S IT WEEKEND THREAD | 117.15 Mill!....NO SPOILERS..NOT EVEN IN TAGS!

Recommended Posts

Currently the highest New Line film since they became part of WB is The Hobbit with $303m domestic, IT could challenge that as well as The first two LOTR films although WW The Hobbit trilogy and LOTR are safe.

I don't think even WB expected it to as well as it did, I think they'd be chuffed with $60-65m OW.

I think RP1 will be WB's next $300M+ breakout.

I'm more conservative on that one because the first teaser while good didn't knock out of the park and I think while the book is popular, it's nowhere near as iconic as IT. I think $75m/$230-250 would be great for RPO.

This is a fucking GREAT weekend for the box office.

After the August drought, September has a hit that nobody would have seen coming before the first trailer was released. Mojo is reporting $117 million for IT's opening weekend? That is fucking insane!

Can any future September releases top that amount?

Maybe IT 2 will have a shot but I doubt it. Post Labor Day weekend may become another major tentpole release date though.

It could end it's foreign and domestic run right now be and it would be seen as doing extremely well for this genre. That's insane.

As insane as that is, the box office story of the year has gotta be Wolf Warriors, right? I was just looking up the top worldwide performers on BOM and I didn't realize it was doing THAT well. It's made almost $850 FUCKIN MILLION in China.

Spielberg's Warner Bros Films along with the [production budget]

28 17 The Color Purple [15m] Warner Bros. $98,467,863 1,109 $1,710,333 192 12/20/85
29 20 A.I. Artificial Intelligence [100m] Warner Bros. $78,616,689 3,242 $29,352,630 3,242 6/29/01
30 29 Twilight Zone: The Movie(Segment 2) [10m] Warner Bros. $29,450,919 1,288 $6,614,366 1,275 6/24/83
31 30 Empire of the Sun [38m] Warner Bros. $22,238,696 673 $1,314,509 225 12/11/87

Even if not flops, AI and EoS were at least dom disappointments.

Spielberg and WB are joining hands after a long time. WB already have a good thing going with Eastwood and Nolan. They would love to get Spielberg a little more regularly even though they or anyone else can't have him exclusively.

Even if he can become an executive producer for a franchise he and WB have started then that could help I guess. Spielberg was genius with TinTin imo. WB has a somewhat weak animation department in WAG, compared to Illumination, WDAS, Pixar and even Sony Animations. Maybe they can work something out with him.

Related question:

Which monthly record will last longer, American Sniper or It?

I'd lean towards It but both are gonna last a long time. Could be either.

Ready Player One will be bigger than The BFG that for sure, it does have a great release date and WB has fantastic marketing, I think a $100m OW is unlikely but $75m+ would be great.
