Presumably when they were hired it was because there was a shared vision as to how the movie would turn out and there was an assumed mutual understanding

Maybe that vision, as exciting in theory, turned out to not be that great in execution and they resisted having to change approach? Maybe they walked back on what the original understanding was?  Or maybe there was a mutual misunderstanding as to vision the whole time. We'll never know for sure.

Or maybe the size of Force Awaken success changed what Disney wanted (I suspect that could be the case for Rogue One for example), all those director hired before Force Awaken first weekend could have needed to adjust to that new reality to be able to stay.

Too bad they (allegedly) were giant dicks.

There are equal allegations that Kennedy edited the movies behind their backs. Truth is, as Numbers said above, there's no way we'll ever know which side (the ones saying Lord/Miller were dicks or the ones saying Kasdan and Kennedy wanted more control than was promised Lord/Miller) is true and probably comes somewhere inbetween.

What I do know though is that judging off their previous works, I'd at least find the Lord/Miller project interesting even if it was a failure whereas I have no desire at all to see whatever movie Ron Howard is cooking up right now.

I just ran out of likes Numbers but rest assured I wanna give this 100 billion. Finally someone on this site being gracious to Lord/Miller on the Han Solo firing.

Maybe they fucked up but judging off their track record and how other producers and colleagues have talked about them before this incident, I highly doubt that.

With the long list of directors fired by that groups... those hit job story in the media become more and more hard to believe (or less and less a reason to loose your job there)

What do you have against Ron Howard? He's a solid Academy Award winning director who delivers good movies most of the time.

Of the blockbusters he's done, I've only liked one of them and that's the one everyone likes (Apollo 13). Lord/Miller, I've enjoyed all their attempts at blockbusters.

(Hell, looking at all the Ron Howard films I've seen, I still only like Apollo 13. Need to see Rush and Frost/Nixon tho)

Regardless of Ron Howard's recent track record the Han Solo film is not going to be his anyways. It's Kathleen Kennedy and Lawrence Kasdan's film now.

Actually the idea of a young Han Solo film predate the Disney acquisition as George Lucas was ready to sell the company he was laying a road map for the sequel trilogy (which got scrapped by Disney) and various ideas for the spin-off films. Some were offered to Kasdan and he chose the young Han Solo idea.

Also a young Han Solo was supposed to be part of that live action Star Wars tv show that Lucas and McCullum tried to develop after the release of Revenge of the Sith but due to budgetary concerns never left the shelf.

Got to love the narrative the press and trades have created of the fired directors being the a##s holes while Kennedy and Disney are the poor old victims. Such BS

This is subjective, but I feel A Beautiful Mind is the dividing line in Ron Howard's filmography. I thought that he peaked with that film and then went downhill. Having said that, the list of good films he has made (just going by online consensus, box office and anecdotal evidence) is extensive and noteworthy.

I don't get the hate for him. He hasn't done a good movie in forever but Nightshift, Splash, Cocoon, Parenthood, Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind are all good. I even enjoyed Far & Away and Ransom.
