It'll likely have solid OS numbers.

What would have mattered was getting the GA onboard the franchise...paying network tv to have a hugely advertised reshowing of Blade Runner and streaming it concurrently on Amazon/Twitter/Netflix with all ads during the performance pushing the new movie...that might have helped... Barring a reshowing, doing what Disney does and having a 30 minute to 1 hour special of "where we are in the BR universe" now on network tv and downloadable online might have helped... You needed to get non-fans aware of the premise and excited to see where it went...nothing was done to do that...it didn't matter what actor/actress was in this - if you don't know what the h$ll is going on, you ain't spending $12 on a 3 hour movie... It is preference and taste. I think IT was awesome, but someone has the right to hate it without being called names. BR2049 simply didn't connect. At the end of the day, that is the end of the story and it doesn't mean the end of the box office. The GA did like it though. Problem must have been the marketing. Hatebox
I did chuckle seeing Sony product placement all over this film, considering many of the corporations who did the same in the first one famously went bankrupt not long after.

Still looking at early OS numbers it can find a way to break even. Edit: Apparently 2049 budget is ranged from $150M-$185M. This could be problematic then. WB can sometimes take four months to release movies on Blu-Ray, but it could be out in January. Theaters won't want this re-expanded either when they have smaller BP nominees to show. WB has a sure-fire BP/BD nominee in Dunkirk. So that's a big internal competition for BR2049 considering that Dunkirk not only got just as glowing reviews but is also a blockbuster of the highest order. WB's not gonna split their campaigning between them. Dunkirk is a priority, BR2049 is going to be some push but not top priority one. MMFR had the advantage of being the only thing that WB had as a possible nominee cause their previous priority crashed and burned in that respect.
