WEEKEND Thread | 'Jigsaw' -16.2M; TYFYS- 3.7M; Suburbicon- 2.8M

The great performance of Let There Be Light (over $1 million in 373 theaters) is very encouraging. If they expand into more theaters next weekend- a time when the threat of Thor: Ragnarok has driven films away from the release date- then this film could certainly keep the momentum going!

One thing that I've noticed is that there's been a string of faith-based films that debut just shy of the top ten. A Question of Faith, The Stray, Same Kind of Different as Me, and now Let There Be Light all unfortunately came just shy of the list no matter how well it did. It makes me a little sad to be honest.

To be fair, Nemo "only" made 340 in its initial run. Incredibles was about 80M under that. Given the demand for its sequel vs the general excitement-but-still-unsure-of of a Finding Nemo sequel, as well as the fact that (while some people argue that they are on the decline) Superhero movies are freaking popular right now.

Yeah, unless Incredibles 2 turns out to be a disappointment, I think it's doing 300m+ at least. I think it has the potential to match the original's adjusted gross (375m), or at least get close to it.

Is that a good start for Coco?

It’s the best original animated opening in Mexico, 4th Best for Animation for Disney and 7th best for animation.

I’m conflicted about Coco.

On one hand, it’s a Pixar movie, has a Frozen short attached to it, great reviews, the last good family movie since Boss Baby and last big one since DM3, it has not to much competition to worry about (DH2 is going sub $100M and the other animated film next to it won’t make anything in comparison), there’s also the possibility that this can attract a lot of Latino families as well.

On the other hand, the buzz seems way muted for Coco, both of the recent trailer views combined is less than 3M, marketing can be a problem ala TGD, the Frozen short that’s attached to it can very well play on ABC a few weeks after, Thor and JL can also draw away a lot of families, I can $300M and $400M for both respectively, and even though it might attract Latino families it doesn’t always work (see PATF and BOL).

I am going to go with $50M/$220M.

me too!  I was thinking Ratatouille numbers and I am not going to let any last minute explosive buzz deter me from predicting 50m OW

Lady Bird and The Man Who Invented Christmas both open in limited next weekend. I'm super curious to see how they both fare because they're going "wide" on Thanksgiving.

Lady Bird should start in the $30-40K PTA range similar to The Florida Project. Won't be a big grosser, but should at least easily avoid the miserable fates of Breathe, Goodbye Christopher Robin, Wonderstruck, etc.

I think it'll open around Wind River's level and actually maintain the PTA unlike Florida Project because A24 will be expanding it quickly.
