This is top tier right here. It's interesting, it's trying to do something, it has good writing. It's like what Lucas wanted to do with thevprequels, but with a good writer/director.

Yeah. I pretty much loved that.

 

There was a part in the middle where it got really emotionally complex for me, because it looked like it was about to go down a road I would have absolutely hated, but then it switched it up on me. There were multiple moments where I was drawn in to the point of getting a nice emotional punch. Rollicking ride. Can't wait to see it again.

I give Johnson (and Disney) mad props for having the balls to deconstruct the mythology and bring a fresh spin on things. I love the movie, it isn't perfect, but it is bold.

I just saw this last night, wanted to give some time before giving a review to let it all sink in (I might really need to see it at least one more time, if not two more times before I can make an accurate review). I woke up this morning still remembering last night......

 

Being fucking awesome!!!

 

I don't really get all the hate that some people are directing towards this film. In fact, it's actually really hypocritical compared to what I was hearing when TFA came out. JJ apparently was too safe and did a redo of "ANH" (I see some similarities, but really don't see how it's so called 'identical') and that it was a rip off of it. Now we have a director who went way beyond and took some risks and shook up SW lore, and now people are going to say that it was too bold or too risky and that he should of toned it down?

 

See, I'm a SW fan and I get it. I love it. But this stuff really pisses me off with the fanatic fans of any fanbase. Nothing will ever be perfect for them (I guess unless they directed it themselves). I sure feel bad for them.

 

As for me, I fucking had an awesome time with this movie. Does it have flaws? Sure, but nothing really that stood out to me enough to make a difference as to how I felt. We'll start with the few things that were 'eh' for me, and they are few"

 

Finn and Rose, given what I heard from some on here and online, I was expecting a disaster. However, they really weren't too bad to be honest. I actually liked the Casino part where they were storming through everything, none of that bothered me at all to be honest and I'm not sure why everyone was hating on it. Was it like, orgasmically awesome like a hot fudge sundae? No, of course not. Then again, not EVERY scene has to be that way. It's okay for a movie to have low points. And really, I thought the chase scene was cool and awesome to watch. The reason it's in my "eh" part is really due to how amazing Rey/Luke's story was that of course everytime it went back to Finn, it didn't match up to the intensity of the other pair, and that's fine. I think the only thing with these two that felt weird to me was the weird kiss Rose gives him after she saves him. I took their bond as friendship, more so because I was under the impression that Finn still liked Rey. So when she kissed him, I felt weird a bit (also not to mention I was like, "Um....not to break up this beautiful between the two of you, but just as a reminder there's that big beam above your heads that's going to DESTROY THE WALL, so quick yapping and get moving!). 

 

Snoke, It was really great to see him upclose and in person this time, and don't get me wrong I loved that Kylo finished him (and not because of the cliche of him being turned to the light). However, I will admit that we really do know almost nothing about him as he's had very little screen time. It would of been nice to know through a character (either Luke or Kylo) to tell Rey how Snoke got involved and basically Ruined Luke's school through Kylo. Instead, he dies and we never really got any sense of dread from him.

 

Length, I do think this film was a tad bit too long. I think if this film cut out about 15-20 minutes, it would be a perfect run time. I did at times check my phone during the film as it did feel like it extended it's time just a tad bit too long. Just when I thought the Admiral crashing her ship into the fleet was the final battle, nope. We get another battle back at another base, so it did feel a bit weird in that sense. 

 

Now......with that out of the way. Time to get into the absolute POSITIVES:

 

Characters, There really isn't one character that stood out, as I thought they ALL did an amazing job. This is arguably probably Mark Hamill's best performance in any Star Wars movie. He pulled off the bitter old man vibe, but also mixed in other emotions such as guilt and hurt, and in the end Hope shown through. Hell, I even LOVED when Yoda made his appearance! He was so funny and just made this film solidified as I felt Yoda was something missing in this series for awhile since ROTJ. Rey was awesome along with others. I thought the film did a great job in giving all the characters breathing room and each their own time (well, with the exception phasma, I do think her character was underutilized and more so in this film vs. TFA. However, given what they did I'll take her character slipping down a bit in role vs. another key character). I loved Chewy! And oh my god....

 

THE PORGS!!!!!

 

They are my next most cutest thing EVER!!! (Right next to BB8). They were hysterical and so fucking awesome. I loved Chewy's scene with them. Everyone was laughing so hard. 

 

I think the biggest Character that jumped was actually Kylo Ren. He went from being a young adult torn about which side he wanted to be on throughout TFA, then ultimately made a decision. To now in this film, starting at the stage but slowly becoming more aggressive and even killing his own master to not be good but be on top at the dark side of the force. It's probably one of the boldest moves I feel like, as SW never has seen a character like this, going after and killing a sith who had control of him only to do it with darker intentions of rising, not due to being pulled to the light. 

 

Action Sequences, Granted I give episodes 4-6 credit. They came out decades ago where technology could only do some much, and they made the most of it and to me they still hold up fine. With that said, it's experiences like this movie gives us that makes me feel glad I'm born in this decade. This movie just blew me away with how gorgeous they made the saber scenes and even space battle scenes. I swear to god, the one part where (earlier stated) she crashed her ship into the First Order fleet through light speed.......that shot where it was all silence, I want that shot as my screensaver, because wow how fucking gorgeous. I mean,......this film just had such great fight sequences, it rivals any other in any SW film period.

 

Cinematography, Along with the action sequences, I loved the pallet choice in this film. There was a lot of red and black, and I loved it. Just how everything was shot was so point on. It was a welcoming refreshing new take on how to film a SW film that we weren't used to seeing.   

 

Humor, I loved all the funny bits in this movie! I do love what this new trilogy is doing in terms of dropping bits of humor in it (vs the original ones). I loved all the funny moments with Chewy (as stated earlier), I died when Luke first told Rey to reach out her hand.......and then he slaps her with the plant bush lmfao! And at the end when Kylo tell them to fire everything at Luke, lmao Hux being all like "So you think you got him?", everyone died.....until we see Luke, and then he just brushes his shoulder off, that got everyone laughing their asses off. It was just so awesome and so well done. 

 

 

Uuuuuuugh, man this movie was SO GOOD. I could literally rant so much more about it but I doubt anyone will read all this shit lmao. I'm just so happy they did such an amazing job. I'll be seeing it like......legit 9 more times......I'm not going to rank this exactly now till I see it at least one more time, but I do know it's in my top 3 SW films.

 

I give this 9.5/10, A+ Overall. Well Done Disney!!!!!

Other than a couple of nitpicks regarding one character(Snoke) and one of the story lines(Canto Bight), I thought it was very very good. 

 

There’s a couple of things that happen in this movie that I was like, HOLY SHIT THAT WAS AWESOME!!! Lol

 

I’ll need to see it again before I can decide where it sits in my ranking of the SW movies.

We know that SW is not known for good acting and dialogues but this was one of the worst scripts of the franchise, the plot was all over the place. Most shocking thing for me was that I spotted several flaws in the CGI, you normally expect quality VFX. The last half hour saved it a bit and looking forward to XI, just wanna forget this poor entry asap. The biggest letdown of the year alongside Alien.

I really like the movie in so many ways and i not giving it a 5/5 just because one story line that goes too long for my taste. 
The film gave me something i wasn't expecting: the feeling of surprise.
As a long time die hard fan of the saga who saw Star Wars in theaters in 1977 5 times, i just love the emotion and the feeling of uncertainty this chapter brings to the saga.

I saw this in a theater half empty (school was in session) with no one in costume. Overall I liked it, but I will share some strengths and weaknesses that ultimately keep this from being the huge success that  I wanted. A big opening weekend, yes. I remember the days when Crocodile Dundee 2 and Rambo 3 got as many butts in seats before the word got out they sucked. This film will drop more than projected, and will also depreciate the final installment (thank the ending for that) The Han Solo film will do worse than Rogue One did, so Disney is unfortunately pumping out unperfected works on a schedule (think DC) and it had an impact. 

 

The biggest plus to this film in the originality in saber fights, weapons, tactics. I actually thought of turning the saber sideways subtly then turning it on myself before it happened.  And there was that old joke about when two light sabers meet, to turn one off, pass by the other, then go back on to strike the opponent. They did that too in a better way. I wish they had more of those scenes, but like Phantom Menace, too much will depreciate the value. 

 

The whole what-happened-with-luke-and-ren theme, with different sides to the same story was nice. It was unexpected to hear Luke's conflict but why was Ray asked if she knew it, responding like she did, then learning it without any emotional growth? She has that jedi detachment and a healthy loathing for people that kill their dad. The makings of a last jedi for sure.

 

The film also struck a good balance with silly robots, and cute critters. There wasn't even a jar jar in the casino. I half expected that. This film will be enjoyable to all ages. 

 

The problems I have didn't all affect my enjoyment, but there are many of them. First the pacing didn't work. It seems to take forever for a few characters to run off to a casino, get caught, get rescued, escape, fly home, and save the day. All while a 6 hour time table is set for the fleet to survive at a tolerable distance while the enemy just lets time elapse knowing that soon time will be on their side. There is too big a lesson in the overconfidence of the bad guy in every movie. They should explain that as a theme in the force and suddenly the movie logic is improved. 

 

How did that new character, the younger sis who fixes things and overhears what pilots talk about become one of the pilots for those drag-in-the-sand-to-be-stable ships that aborted and got destroyed. I will tell you why, so she can deliver a new theme in the film about saving who you love instead of fighting who you hate. That gave finn a love triangle one Ray returned. Which leads me to my next point. 

 

This film recreated the sequences from episodes 5 and 6 just like TFA did. that was something that if spoiled, would ruin TFA. We have the showdown of good, bad being turned, and super big bad as they watch the fleet get wiped out. That whole this was a predictable copy. At least Ren's students are all defeated and loose ends are set. 

 

As a few escape transport ships managed to not get destroyed dispite 5 minutes of screen time bombardment with a ship gone every 3 seconds, we now skip somehow to everyone unpacked and stationed in the base. How did the bad fleet not see the base, not even consider their outcome as Leia hoped. Only Ren just knew and wanted to unexpectedly finish what they waited for so long to do. It sounds like a master plan with layers but it was bad storytelling to be sure. 

 

Everyone runs with the sparkle wolves without taking any of their abundant supplies? that is just forgotten. That is lazy. 

 

So what are we left with? An Azgardian failure with one ship full of a resistance, and a message that that one candle can start a blaze to burn down the first order. A heafty message that must be, to carry the next film from exhaustion to #1 film in 2019 (counting the quickly decreasing ticket sales in 2020). 

 

Oh and stay for the after credit scene with a young solo meeting that del toro guy who betrayed our heros for money. I still am unsure about that film in the hands of Disney not Lucas.

I've seen comments suggesting Driver deserves an Oscar for this performance. You're just surprised because he yelled sometimes, it wasn't bad but nah. He wants to insist on moving past the past and he can't, he thinks that if he kills everyone, he can. 

Was Snoke wasted? Sure, but I couldn't see this trilogy fleshing him out beside Palpatine 2.0 so what happened to him didn't disappoint me.

 

Poe had a wonderful arc and development. It was typical, but it was nice. I was just happy to see more of him and Leia.

 

I thought Rey had the worst arc when they tied it in to Kylo Ren. So much was wasted on a plot of trying to bring him back when we all knew Star Wars was not going to be that off the wall, despite everything else. And I'm glad they didn't do that, I don't need 'woman drags evil man from the brink' shit. That really annoyed me because everyone could see it was a waste of time, working off the idea that she 'didn't even try to stop the darkness' would have been far more interesting. I did like her realizing that her parents were shit and moving to the idea of being herself, not tied to any lineage.

 

I enjoyed seeing Luke again, but I think - there was more Mark than Luke on the screen. At this point, they're nearly one and the same, probably, but I felt like I was watching a man I see in interviews and videos be himself instead of be his character most of the time. when he was worried about the Jedi - how he idolized them, was one, and realized that they were royally garbage - that was more Luke.

 

The Canto Bight stuff seems really despised, (Reddit hates it because none of the people involved are white men - surprise, surprise.) - it's the only plot line that is a real waste of time. And I say this as someone who enjoyed watching them romp around this racetrack city. Poe, Rey, Kylo, Amilyn, Leia - they all fail at least once in their plots, but their plots had a purpose. The plan changes without warning (Why would Rose and Finn not take some kind of communication with them?) .

 

DJ was weird but he brought up a good point - how much of the galaxy is really being bothered by the First Order? How much is helping the Resistance? In the end, the latter sends out distress beacons but no one helps them. I kind of got the impression, at the very end, that the Galaxy at large didn't really care. At least in TFA they blew up a planet.

 

 

 

I highly enjoyed the film for the most part, but I don't see why people are split SO severely from it, especially regarding the Jedi "changes", because they're not really if you know about anything beyond the trilogies. Not even deep EU stuff, this is Clone Wars level knowledge.

I really think this is one of those films that will be viewed so differently in 10 years time. Heck even next month... it's gonna be a proper long term developer.

B+ after first viewing but definitely seeing it again.

Only major issue I had was the casino scene which felt like it belonged in the prequels.

Will give my full thoughts after a second viewing but I really liked it and haven't stopped thinking about it's strongest points since seeing it last night. Was never expecting to see Yoda again and get another Luke/Yoda teaching moment.
