This is obviously a weekend movie.

Mostly due to being family friendly, deflated week days and minorities preferring to see movies on the weekend (anecdotal take).

Last weekend's hold was beast mode.

I'm guessing around 67 m with an outside shot of 70 m.

DP added 2.5x the 3rd weekend to it's cume.

If BP does 65 weekend for 500 then with 2.5x more it gets to 500 + 162.5 = 662.5, just over Titanic for #3 dom all time.

There's definitely a lot of casual moviegoers in the GA who watch it still. For reference, the Oscars had about 33 million viewers in the US alone last year (or about one third the number that watched the Superbowl). Deadpool dropped 43% that Sunday instead of its usual mid-30% despite being a CBM.

And Get Out only dropped 20% on Oscar Sunday. The people who are going to want to watch Black Panther on Sunday are going to see Black Panther Oscars or no Oscars. It has been putting up insane numbers with the Winter Olympics airing, so people who want to sit and watch the Oscars are not going to affect it. In addition, the awards season movies have performed terribly this season. Get Out and Dunkirk performed great, but they were released outside award season. If the Best Picture nominees were just from the fall, as is usually the case, the nominees make the lowest-grossing batch in recent years. The nominees are what usually affects the ratings.

More than a world series game and some NFL playoff games, I imagine because there is a high proportion of frequent movie goer watching, make the effect a bit bigger.

Barely beating a random wildcard game says more about football's audience than it does about the Oscars.

As I said earlier today when I said Panther's increase was good not great (and I am right, now that you can see all the films in context) it is obvious that the large/premium screens (non-discounted) as well as the sheer amount of demand are tempering the swings a bit. Panther should by nature then have a smaller drop today than most films.

Not sure what it says when Annihilation is the only film in the top 10 to increase less than Panther since it's more adult audience should have been a boost to it. NOT being negative toward Panther (as some were earlier insinuating), I just find the number differences interesting.

Samson Pure Flix Entertain… $128,315 +40% 1,140 $113   $3,963,017 12

What Went Wrong?

There are 50000 screens in North America. Let's say Samson was released in 20000 screens. That's approx 2,000,000 seats. At $8 per ticket, that's $16m per show. At 3 shows per day, it should be $48m per day. That make for a above $100m OW.

As we can see Samson didn't come anywhere close to what it deserve. Is the present day moral corruption to blame? Or control of Disney on humankind?

WHAT WENT WRONG?
