Han, where are the predictions you made last Sunday for this weekend and the +/- deviations?

I think above all else, it kind of shows that when most people talk about "I want to see diversity in movies", they mean "I want to see diversity in the type of movies I already watch".

Or I don't want "pandered diversity" - I want it from properties that already celebrate the culture, not ones where it's "shoved in" - I mean, Wrinkle in Time is not a book which had minority characters in the plot; whereas, Black Panther is an entire awesome world of a minority culture...

Maybe it's as simple as that...don't force it - find the properties that already celebrate it.  I mean, no one would stay away from Black Panther b/c it is exactly like it is in its original property, so if you love that property, you get exactly what you want...

Wrinkle in Time apparently isn't at all like its original property (and this is more than just for the change of character ethnicities, but also the major change from the tone of the book, dropping all the religion and theming - it's a lesson that you change too much, and you could lose what made the property popular in the 1st place...

I'm still sad for the weekend - $35.0M+ didn't happen (although it came close), and it should have happened...this kinda property with the budget and names attached (and the Disney name) should have pulled this off...but lazy, bad marketing, bad timing after Black Panther, and a not great movie that apparently is splitting book lovers (and even Disney fans if you go to the Disboards) and you get a slight disappointment...

Well, at least I didn't lose my fake Casino money, b/c no one was quite brave enough to accept my bet:)...

Movies are an addiction.  I love going to the theatre...so pretty please with sugar on top...recommend a fucking movie.  :)

Any movie?!

My lovely love wife and I rewatched The Truman Show on Netflix the other night. Haven't seen that since VHS in the late 90's. I saw it opening weekend as a kid and even bought the soundtrack. A lot of music cues, lines, moments came back to me as the film rolled along.

Film really holds up and foretold the reality TV boom. Two years after it opened, Survivor premiered. Would love to see the other endings they filmed and especially the test footage screenwriter Andrew Niccol shot (the "WHO ARE YOU TALKING TO?!" scene with... Gary Oldman and Emma Thompson!?!)

For some reason people treat Oprah like she's some kind of deity.  She has never been a box office draw and she hasn't really been a relevant personality for about a decade.

Exactly! But I blame that on her fan base, which is mostly middle class white women. Most of us in the black community think she's overrated as fuck!!

And yet she was billed number one in the movie.  It makes no sense to me.  She was a talk show host but for some reason studio heads think that people want to see her in a movie?  Strange.

The reason why she is seen as someone who can sell is because for years her show was used to promote often obscure products and people. She often vaulted them into an insane amount of success/prominence - Dr. Oz, Dr. Phil, her book club, even to a lesser extent President Obama, etc. I love Oprah!

The guys who did those infomercials, the guy with the funny face, he could sell the shit out of things too, but he wouldn't be a draw in a movie.

I think the fact that Oprah is also a credible actrsss helps. She did an excellent job in the Color Purple and in The Butler. She wields a lot of power in the industry, often ranking amongst the most powerful people in the entertainment. I guess my point is that, if she wants to act in a movie, then very few studios will say no. Oprah is soemtimes hit or miss like most actors/actresses. Most of her stuff falls in the middle.
