Titantic is even more dominant but it was simply a comparison. It's also not in the same era and had nothing like Twitter, streaming or Netflix to deal with. It was in the box office for what felt like 2 years.

Titanic was a monster, the greatest bo run without question, that's why the Federer comparison makes no sense. You can't be the unquestioned greatest on par with freaking Titanic if you have a clear losing record against both of your rivals.

Nope Wrong! I'm more of an award season geek than box office.

Black Panther has received no best director nomination, did not win the golden globes, and did not get nominated for British academy best pictures nor did it get a Director's guild nomination. Has only 7 Oscar nominations and did not get any major nomination apart from best picture (which made it basically a "also run")

btw, I was talking about Endgame, not Black panther, nice try though.

Frankly, I could give a rat-ass what the academy nominates and doesn’t nominate. I’ve disagreed with them so many times on who should, I don’t pay attention to them. The Dark Knight didn’t get nominated for best picture/best director. Which is a complete joke. The green book winning best picture is just longest in a line of travesties. Another is Moonlight over La La Land.

Hmm according to BOM IW's 5th weekend was 14.5m (OS - China) and it went on to make about 50m more (again OS-China), if my calculation are correct. Including DOM's 50m after Memorial Days 4-day, that's almost exactly 100m more it grossed after this weekend WW. If EG does the same it would be only 10m short of Avatar.

Dunno why @Charlie Jatinder is throwing in the towel yet. It's too close to comfort, the champagne bottles remain corked for the time being...

You were the one who brought Academy up to justify Avatar being a bad film though

It's otherwise not usually a good idea to bring Academy awards into a box office discussion.

People who think Avatar adjusts down, dont take into account market expansion. How big was Avatar in China. It crushed the previous record by 3x. In today's market it would have crushed 1B. There are other expanding markets as well. Even latin american markets have expanded big time.

When TItanic broke domestic record it crushed the previous record by 50%. OS more than doubled previous hits. Avatar was not at titanic level but it almost beat Titanic by a huge margin.

Avengers run is extremely impressive bcos of growth from IW which itself grew a lot from previous avengers movie. Basically Endgame doubled Ultron in 4 years which is uber impressive.

So Endgame is projected to get within 99% of Avatar's WW gross, and you seriously think these fights can be kept out of a forum filled with MCU and Cameron fans.

The only thing that could avoid all of that would be objectivity, but it's a rare thing when you root for a team.

We root for numbers? Records.. 1 film topping another... and getting a life in between

IW had open weeks in May end and Early June till Incredibles 2 internationally. It droped just 21% in 6th weekend, with Endgame having Godzilla in 6th weekend, that 21% is impossible. Further next week will see Dark Phoenix. And up next TS 4.

Titanic is like the greatest football player ever in 1937. Not a fair comparison

The average critical rating on RT is 8.30 for Endgame and 8.26 for Black Panther, so saying it's "nowhere close" is wrong.

He also thinks Avatar 2 is doing 4b with 1.2b in China so take his statements with a grain of salt.

You should always compare movies in similar era. The fact that Titanic doubled the biggest movie previously WW which was Jurassic Park(very audience friendly DInosaurs). Titanic did it as 3.5 hr drama was crazy. Also there were few megaplexes and more importantly NO IMAX, PLF or 3D.

Oh yeah, there's no way Avatar adjust down, even if global Inflation and exchange rates cancels each other out, Market expansion itself would propel a film to a different stratosphere.

The fact that 2019 global market is $42B+ and was $29.4B in 2009 should be a very clear indicator that market expansion rules over everything. People are trying to ignore that to suit certain narratives.

Sure, that might change things slightly.

That massive take down took only 4.5 years, global markets didn't change that much from 1993 to 1997, greatest ownage in box office is there ever is one.

Lack of movie competition was due to existence of world cup competition
