Does Won't You Be My Neighbor count as a breakout?

Being outside of America I never got too deep into the entire MoviePass situation but I get the impression it's demonstrated that people are willing to go out and watch more movies in theaters, but something needs to be done about the cost esp. when it comes to smaller films.

It does, for documentaries anyway. I'm thinking 40-50 mil at least though. At this rate Eighth Grade will probably reach the 20 mil mark as well.

Somebody brought up Big Sick from last summer which I forgot about, so that's one.

Ant-Man and the Wasp is at $230.8m OS with China, Japan, Portugal, and Italy left. How much more can we expect it to do overseas?

Also...Mamma Mia 2's overseas gross looks really weak compared to the first when it only has a few more markets to open in...the first was almost the biggest OS grosser of its year. This one looks to finish with about how much?

China: 100-110

Japan: 10ish

Italy: 5-6

Portugal: 0.5-1

No clue about the remaining territories or UK where it opened this weekend.

Saturday jumps

+8.1% Christopher Robin

+1.2% Spy Who Dumped

+14% Darkest Minds

lopsided with small Thursday preview #s to larger Friday #s to smaller Saturday jumps.

the rest of the holdovers on Saturday seemed to outperform last Saturday's increases/business

Sunday (today) should probably be on the cusp of -30% at worst.

Edge of Tomorrow was released after Oblivion, which is universally accepted as Cruise's best sci-f film (topping Minority Report). Why not?

which is his best film? you're talking about EOT, right?

EOT suffered because it was released after the mediocre sci-fi Oblivion. People probably expected more of the same...mediocre sci-fi movie

The Meg appears to be the perfect send off to the summer. Guilty pleasure delivered on a large platter. That's what the marketing advertises. Will it translate to decent BO numbers and critical reception (tongue in cheek vibe)? I don't know. I'm sold on it myself right now. We'll see.

EOT suffered due to a monumentally awful marketing campaign that advertised it as a derivative and by the numbers sci-fi film. Nothing could be further from the truth. Oblivion, which I enjoyed, had nothing to do with its shortcomings in the box office.

- mi6's 1st sat bump from true friday was unexpectedly close to 30% compared to mi5's ~20%

- tue and sat have some correlation it seems. then tue bump almost pushed the movie to 10m.

- this sat the bump is 2nd best to only eq2's (3rd weekend) in top 12. had a better sat bump than jw2 which always does stronger than most films on sat.

In 65 Universal markets, Dwayne Johnson’s action title added $5.2M for a $123.2Minternational gross and $187.7M worldwide. China has now reached $94M via Legendary East, adding $3M in the session. Together, that’s $281.7M global. The movie has topped Johnson-starrers San Andreas and Rampage in 22 and 30 markets, respectively. Japan is still on deck September 21.

6 more dom (after 2.2 weekend), 12 more os (after 5.2 weekend) and say 12 from Japan will give Sky around 310 ww, 315 at most. 110-115 less than Rampage. Sky's reported prod buget was 125 compared to Rampage's 120.

The exchange rate of local currencies to dollars for many countries especially in the UK where it is over performing has really fallen in the last decade so even if it matches or exceeds the first film in lc, in dollars it'll still be down from the first film.

seriously. i haven't seen mamma mia 2 so i don't know if she suddenly woke up for that project but she's been wallpaper in everything else. i don't hate her but i couldn't imagine having any sort of reaction to her work.

Far more likely to be like that for Portugal. Doubt it goes as low as 0.5, since kids are fully out of school until mid September and even the 1st Ant-Man grossed nearly 800K USD. Very little competition too. Only worrying prospect for AM&TW is The Meg (which should blow up in the Jason Statham dick sucking country this is.... though The Meg probably deserves to blow up everywhere anyway).

I imagine you're about right with the others, though. I could even put a little bit more on China, given that the 1st one made 105M, so I could see a bump up to 115-120 type thing.

Three guys fall in love with Lily James in like two days and it's by far the most plausible part of Mamma Mia 2.

She's crazy charming.

The Charlize Theron curse.
