Good trailer but very weird that they are showing the first footage less than two months before the release date.

That's because they had a very short schedule, they finished shooting this the other day.

STX Tries to Put Flops Behind It as It Searches for Star Executive, Fresh Capital

(...)

Filmmakers behind “Hustlers,” an upcoming film about strippers who turn the tables on their Wall Street clients, were specifically said to be anxious about the rollout of the September release.

Others close to the company disputed that the studio is shortchanging “Hustlers,” which boasts a starry cast that includes Jennifer Lopez, rapper Cardi B, singer Lizzo, and Constance Wu. Another insider close to Lopez and producer Elaine Goldsmith Thomas said they are pleased with Fogelson’s commitment to the film. A trailer for “Hustlers” dropped on Tuesday night, attracting positive buzz on social media.

There are signs, however, that a divide may be opening up between the pop star and the studio. On Monday, another Lopez project abruptly left the studio for a new home. The music-focused romantic comedy “Marry Me” moved from STX to Universal Pictures. The film stars Lopez and Owen Wilson, and is budgeted between $20 million and $25 million, sources close to the deal said. While Lopez carved out time in her schedule to shoot this fall, STX told the pop star last week that she’d have to wait until May of 2020 to begin work on the project, one of the insiders close to the movie said. Lopez did not want to wait.

Sad that STX didn't have money to shoot the next Jennifer Lopez project, and that had to move to Universal. After the success of Second Act and Hustlers, international distributors would beg STX to buy her next film.

Honestly I think STX is the perfect studio for this kind of mid budget star-driven film. Not to mention they were the ones who believed in the worldwide sensation Second Act in the first place, when no other studio would

This film might not be a hit with critics, but it sure looks like it aims to offer a snapshot of modern ideologies regarding feminism. It will be interesting to see if this film is capable of beating The Goldfinch, which opens on the same weekend.

The future of STX might ride on this success if they haven't already crossed a point of no return with Uglydolls. Theoreticallt, with stars like Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Cardi B, and Lizzo, this should be able to achieve sleeper hit status. And STX is truly in the doghouse if they can't pull that off.

Quote

Lorene Scafaria's star-studded, female-led drama Hustlers is tracking for a strong $24 million debut at the U.S. box office, according to those with access to the surveys.

STX is in need of a box office win after its big-budget miss Uglydolls. The indie studio has pushed back several releases, including 21 Bridges and Playmobil: The Movie, while Hustlers has remained a priority.

Insiders say Hustlers cost a relatively modest $20 million to produce before marketing, and that even an opening in the mid- to high-teen millions would be a great start for the pic. They note that Hustlers sports as much unaided awareness as films including Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star Is Born.

I've said something along the same lines before, but I think Hustlers is uniquely suited to be a hit in this current moment, because it feels like a film that can speak to many of the people who are a part of the culture. That, and it doesn't look half bad. It's so aggressively feminist that it's bound to peak people's interest in this day and age. I wouldn't be surprised by a $25M+ OW.
