The reign of Caracalla is pretty much considered the start of the Crisis of the Third century. Caracella was even crazier then Commodus.

Gladiators fighting wild animals was a standard attraction for the Roman Games.

SOme galdiators specialized in it, they were called "Beastarii".

I had little interest in a sequel but late style Ridley is deeply bizarre so I'm curious if this is gonna be a classic crowdpleaser like 1...or something far weirder.

It's crazy that a man who is about to turn 86 just spent weeks promoting his current movie and now is about to go finish shooting his next movie. And yes Denzel is what makes this even more exciting to look forward too.

this feels like the big wild card of next year, very strong release date so the onus is on Ridley to deliver, and I hope (and think) he can

I'm hoping this follows the pattern established by Ridley's two previous 'true' sequels (Hannibal and Covenant) - beautiful, painterly film-making mixed with truly queasy, baroque horror (the Pazzi hanging in Hannibal, the backburster sequence in Covenant) and wonderfully out of place campy villainy (Gary Oldman/hammy Hopkins or Michael Fassbender playing homoerotic flute with himself).

 

Batshit Ridley Scott might not always be good, but it's sure as hell fun to watch (see also - The Counselor)
