Weekend Thread: The End is Near.

My guess is that Top Gun 2 and In The Heights end up being the first releases after the slowdown, plus the settling down period is done, and both make bank on the back of that. Currently, based on CDC estimates, the "emergency" period will go through the end of May, then give everyone 3-4 weeks to settle down and get back to normalcy. The weekend before Independence Day sounds about right for full recovery.

if all is gong well then Paramount should have sneak previews on Father's Day to build hype

While nothing is playing at capacity, I wonder how much the 50% cap on sales at the major chains is having an effect.

In Seattle, it's basically only the AMC and Regals that are open. Most of the independent theaters are closed.

If you cut your boxoffice in half, it sure as hell is going to have an effect.

Paramount is gonna have a great year between Sonic, Top Gun 2 and A Quiet Place 2

Onward is looking at a potentially 75% drop. Disney might as well pull it from theaters after this weekend and maybe re-release it when life starts to slip back into normalcy to see if they can squeeze some lost dollars out of it cause parents and kids are only gonna continue avoiding theaters (and most public places) for the foreseeable future.

What about piracy issues? And does Disney re-market the entire film? Cause everything now is basically sunk cost.

You can argue the same for some movies that got squeezed / killed by competition; tons of movies that release every summer doesn’t have good number of theaters / screencounts because there are simply too many movies showing; but have you heard of studios pulling back a movie halfway after release? To rerelease it?
it does not make any sense.

Does not work this way; it is not about cutting box office by half.

now you are assuming that when cinema chains half the capacity, that 50% is still filled. This is not the case, Cinema chains can half the capacity of seatings, this relates to the supply of tickets - but the supply (even after being halved), far outstrip the demand.

Basically this.

What I'm more wondering is if even the information about half capacity is enough to keep people away.

Paramount already lost all their profit from Sonic by spending P&A on AQP 2 which they have to respend when AQP 2 re-releases. Paramount still taking an L this year.

Think it will take a bit longer for cinemas to re-open though. China only reopening cinemas at the start of May eventhough the country has been returning to normalcy for the past week. Maybe Minions 2 will be the first release. Even if it all goes back to normal in June, I'm pretty sure that Paramount will have delayed Top Gun 2 and WB would have delayed In the Heights too by that time. Don't think any of the June releases are staying because studios won't want to risk it.

If it all goes like I think it will, Tenet will be the first major post-Coronavirus release.

2020. The year where releasing a movie in January was more viable than releasing a movie in May.

Sonic and TIM release look very well timed. Sonic had a deep run compared to most movies right now.

Even Emma for that matter salvaged something by going wide last weekend.

CotW will loose much less money than Onward. They could have swapped release dates as CotW was not really Disney's own movie but all too easy to say now.

lmao Britt Robertson is in this shit? Tomorrowland completely destroyed her career. The only other thing I saw her in after that was some godawful Nicholas Sparks movie.

And yet Brad Bird, Damon Lindelof and Clooney survived scott free... hmm...
