Quote

It was a busy weekend at global turnstiles, with a particularly noisy start for Paramount’s A Quiet Place Part II. The John Krasinski-helmed sequel came out shouting with a $22M overseas debut in just 12 markets for a worldwide opening of $70.4M including the three-day $48.4M North American haul. AQP2 did better than expected in China with a $15M FSS, and that’s despite a super short lead time as its date there was only made official on Tuesday. Notably, if we back out the China start this weekend, AQP2 debuted 66% ahead of the original 2018 film (including previews).

Also new was Disney’s Cruella with $16.1M in 29 material markets, or about 60% of the offshore footprint. That’s good for a global opening of $37.4M. The film also premiered on Disney+ for an additional fee in markets where the service is available. The overseas weekend take is under the $20M projections we were hearing ahead of the debut — likely impacted by recent closures in Australia and Japan — although critical and social sentiment is encouraging. Mexico led play with a No. 1 $2.6M, followed by Korea at $2.5M in second place behind the hold of F9, and the UK bowed to $2.2M in third – there is a public holiday tomorrow as well as a school break ahead. Other No. 1s apart from Mexico include Spain, Italy and Brazil. Notably not included in this opening suite were Russia, China and France.

If legs are good and the movie consistently appear on Nielsen charts then it did good.

Raya was considered a disaster for some people when released and here we are, it will pass Tenet domestic and manage to keep reaching top 10 on Nielsen even if it's available only in PA.

Appearing on Nielsen weekly doesn't mean much imo. Most views weekly probably come from people who have already bought the film before and rewatching (people don't realise how much kids love rewatcing movies).

I hope WB can eventually realise their day-to-date strategy without any PA is basically killing the hens for eggs.

They already pay everybody, it's done this year.

And also they know that, but they are aiming to enter the streaming competition and don't have much content for this year, only the movies.

I don't think they will regret that much, it was always obvious they will lose money. And their movies are doing good in general, would be better without HBO Max but still doing good.

Well Raya did almost 400 million minutes viewed on It's first 3 days alone. I'm pretty sure most part of it ain't rewatchs, too little time for it.

And it's still is the closest thing we have to say the movie did fine afterall since D+ never reveal specific numbers.

This and the fact that they're still doing the PA thing.

This huge font problem is happening to me now, mods?? There’s no obvious fix.

Go to the top of the page and click the "Customizer" button. It's right next to the "Messages" button. Scroll down, click "Larger font-size for posts?", save, and the font gets smaller

Still, we’ll never truly know though. Only guesstimates.

Isn’t Raya always behind Moana from 2016?

Man, I just want to know if Demon Slayer held well enough to get to 50M. Curse you funimation, and your poor reporting ways.

I'm talking about the latter weeks. Not it's opening weekend.

Great for Quiet Place. Kinda shitty Saturday hold for Cruella - though it could get closer to 25m 3-day. I know alot of people that saw it - VOD probably doing well.

I think Shang-Chi is our first 200m domestic grosser and Spider-Man/Matrix combo both do over 300m (assuming no COVID spikes and Matrix not going to HBO max).

One thing is obvious, if PA wasn't a success Disney wouldn't continue to push for it.

I do agree with most folks, 45 day exclusive theater window would make the most sense.

Yes, Moana is free and have a smash soundtrack.

Raya is only for who paid.

If I was brand new and cost $200m+ with a $50m domestic box office total after more than 3 months, I wouldn’t want to come second (at best) to a 5 year old film that’s free.

But, each to their own lol.

The total gross for DS is wrong here. On Tuesday, Funimation already made an announcement it grossed $45M already.

Yes, but it's now slightly larger than it was yesterday, even with the "font fix".  Had to shrink my browser zoom size just for this website to try to make it a bit better.

I reckon @Shawn is poking with configuration files behind the scenes, so I'll be patient until it's all sorted out.

(still slightly annoying, mind ;))

I've never seen Disney not underestimate Weekend totals. Probably best to see actuals first yeah.

Well it will if it costs $30 to watch.
