WGA/SAGAFTRA Strike Discussion Thread | SAG Ratifies Contract

Worth noting - studios bluffing about this being their final offer and no meetings till January: extremely likely

Studios saying television deadlines require a deal to be made soon to save the 2024 season: also very likely. They're bluffing about a lot but broadcast TV has deadlines and we're running real, real close to several of them

it's been said many times this ends when the AMTP is ready for it to end. If they want to die on this AI/LIkeness hill and blow the whole thing up they will if they want somewhat of a TV season and not a complete wasteland of least half a movie year then they will need to come down off that hill.

They'll be stubbornly staying on that hill for the sake of their pride until shareholders start asking questions. And a bad holiday season is unfortunately the most likely path to that outcome.

The thing is, this is where the diversity of the AMPTP companies potentially becomes a problem. It could be a bad holiday season for Disney, WB, and Universal, but it won't be a bad holiday season for Apple, Amazon, and probably even Netflix. Someone earlier posted one of those insider reports that the tech companies weren't willing to go as far as the traditional companies on AI regulations and that seems pretty believable.

So many lawsuits are going to happen because of AI and people trying to capitalize with known actors/actresses. Get ready to get sued up the ass if you do it though.

This is something the studios must accept, absolutely zero AI. Sure as hell not scanning some dead person without their consent or paying the family.

The studios can't get away with this AI thing. Scarlett Johanson just sued some company for using her likeness. It's a lost cause...i don't know why the studios insist

Thing is governments are going to make a decision around IP and AI. The idea they are shutting up shop for this fight is just fucking ridiculous to me. What they agree will not hold.

It is so disturbing though that studios think audiences will watch a movie with a Gene Kelly AI or something akin to it when the actor is dead. Do they truly think audiences would find that "cool and neat"? I mean who are we kidding these greedy shits thought it'd be so cool to disrespect George Reeves in The Flash movie.

Studios Adjust AI Language in Push to End SAG-AFTRA Strike

https://variety.com/2023/biz/news/sagaftra-strike-ai-amptp-contract-1235783065/

Quote

Hollywood’s major studios have agreed to adjust language on artificial intelligence as they move closer to a contract agreement to end the 117-day SAG-AFTRA strike.

Union negotiators met Monday night with the leaders of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. In the meeting, the two sides appear to have resolved some of the pending issues on AI, which has become the central focus of the talks over the last 10 days.

SAG-AFTRA leaders are set to meet this afternoon with the union’s negotiating committee. The hope is that the latest movement on AI will be enough to seal the deal.

Hmmm…in the article from a different trade last night (Deadline), it was indicated that there was still “serious daylight” between the two parties on some things. So I’m not sure what to make of this Variety reporting, unless AI issues were resolved last night and the daylight is referencing the residuals or something else? I want to be hopeful but think we should wait for something directly from SAG-AFTRA.
