keysersoze123
Good wednesday drop will guarantee domestic win for Barbie. With summer weekdays it aint missing 600m. That said I am expecting actuals to be lower. I would take 27/12 for both these movies 🙂 Edited July 25, 2023 by keysersoze123
LonePirate
I don’t want to say it’s impossible but if Barbie does clear $30M, well $30.6M to be more exact, it would be a sub-30% drop. For a non-holiday Monday, that’s practically unheard of. If Oppy can stay at or above $14M, that would be a sub-40% drop, which itself is an amazing hold. We may never see another non-holiday Monday where two openers hold as well as Barbenheimer has done. Incredible!
excel1
Oppenheimer may be benefiting from the military theme similar to TGM last year too. Serious high quality high profile military stuff just outright sells.

RyneOh1040
if that barbie number holds it is more shocking than the OW. my god.
LonePirate
This is the last day the Cinemark app has showtimes for the IMAX 70mm showing of Oppenheimer in Dallas. There are no IMAX showtimes listed for any film after this date. The gray seats have already been sold for a Wednesday 10:45pm showing three weeks after its release. Theaters would be stupid to replace the film with Gran Turismo in IMAX theaters as that film won’t sell anywhere close to the number of tickets even if it is playing 5 or 6 times a day instead of 4. The IMAX 70mm and regular 70mm theaters would be wise to keep Oppy on their screens at least until Dune or The Marvels arrives (whichever comes first).
WrathOfHan
30M (-31%) 33M (+10%) 28M (-15%) 25.2M (-10%) 35.3M (+40%) 49.4M (+40%) 39.5M (-20%) 124.2M Weekend, 23% drop Good God. Even if it has small weekends jumps, it should easily take away the third highest grossing second weekend from Infinity War (114M). 14M (-40%) 14.7M (+5%) 12.5M (-15%) 12M (-4%) 17M (+42%) 25.5M (+50%) 19M (-25%) 61.5M Weekend, 25% drop Also fucking nuts. The rest of the summer has been scorched by Barbenheimer. 1

It's IMAX's call on who gets to keep screens that weekend. At least in NY, Lincoln Square is fully keeping Oppenheimer over Gran Turismo, and I expect it to stay here well into September. Gran Turismo will probably have to settle for 1-2 shows at some locations because Oppenheimer is just too massive of a hit for IMAX to dump it.

The rest of the summer has been scorched by Barbenheimer. Tuesday is not increasing. the main 4-8pm shows already sold out mostly tonight. Tomorrow they will sell out again but at cheaper prices. There is no capacity for it to sell tons more seats during the peak period on Tuesday, so the discount will actually hurt it somewhat. 3

Fanboy
If both movies are doing that well I'm curious to see how everything else did. Regardless, Barbie having the 2nd biggest non-holiday Monday ever with another movie doing over 10M is huge. Great for cinemas.

Agreed, it is quite common to mega-opener to stay flat to even drop on Tuesday because they are taking less money from the same number of crowds.
