If this was as good and well received as Halloween 2018, there was potential for really big numbers for the trilogy, which would make the $400m payment for the rights a good investment. Everyone would be interested in an Exorcist reboot that has been praised and brought something new and interesting to the genre while being a great homage to the original, it's an iconic franchise.

It's a cheesy religious movie about one of the members of the Robertson (Duck Dynasty) family.

It's another faith-based movie, this one from a micro studio (pretty much an LLC formed to make this exact movie) and a few other groups, distributed in the "normal" faith-based movie way as a Fathom Event.  It's big hook is that it's a "true life prequel" to Duck Dynasty's family.

DGG is gonna do what he did after Your Highness and The Sitter flopped back to back and go back to smaller dramas for a couple years. Then in like seven years he’ll then jump into another genre for a couple years. My money is on sci-fi if the rumors of him trying to get a Star Wars movie made are true.

Having just rewatched Pineapple Express about a month ago, I'd love to see David Gordon Green have a go at an action film. (Or, better yet, find a way to have him be the guy who resurrects the action-comedy buddy movie.) The third act of Pineapple Express, even amid all the very silly jokes, is pretty exciting for what it is.

 

In light of The Exorcist: Believer's underperformance, it's worth remembering that the 2000 re-release of the original film actually did really well around this time of year: $8.2 million opening in 664 theaters, and just under $40 million total. I feel like that release also helped to further cement the film's legacy with the generations that either weren't around for the original release or didn't remember it.

Referred to it a few pages back but he definitely seems like the kind of director who would take a chance at going the Emmy-friendly limited series route (a true crime one in the Under the Banner of Heaven/The Staircase mold in particular). Perhaps the easiest way for a quick rebound from this type of flop run (making a trilogy of ill-advised horror legacy sequels over consecutive years).

Almost 12M for The Exorcist is a very fine number :).

 

The weekend thread is always bad but still I was astonished to see many ridiculous comments yesterday. Low 20ies...

 

By the way almost 3M from previews was exactly in line with the numbers of the Buzz and Tracking Thread. And our true Friday number was around 10M.

I think people are conflating paying for rights with budgets. No one knows what's in that $400m deal number that was thrown around besides Universal. And it's far from the only such deal, Netflix paid $450m for just the rights to the 2 Knives Out sequels. Warner paid $500m for a deal with J.J. Abrams, which ended up with him making literally nothing. Ditto Netflix and Benioff/Weiss.

the budget was only 30m but with this kind of terrible reception, future movies have a much harder road to success so the 400m spend probably won't be worth it in the end

All we know is the $400m includes the rights and the budgets for three films. 
 

Could just be a 2021 Covid era streaming focused deal that didn’t pay off. A time when companies were paying way too much for content, like Netflix paying $469m for two Knives Out sequels and I don’t know if that one even included the budgets (Glass Onion was $40m). 
 

With The Exorcist, it does say that the deal means that the two sequels could go to Peacock, but the first film had to be theatrical only. So it’s likely they’ll be day and date if they actually release them. 
 

I enjoyed Exorcist Believer. But I think a new writer director and no legacy nonsense will make for a better film next time.
