What a waste. I was really hoping for that Radiohead rumour to be true. If it had to be Sam Smith (possibly the most uninspired choice for Bond theme ever, and I say this as someone who quite likes Sam Smith) then it could have at least had a little more oomph to it.

Smith made a good stab at the worst Bond song ever but yes, Madonna still wears that crown.

 

Either way I'm genuinely annoyed I'll have to endure four minutes of it at the cinema.

I'd begrudgingly give it props for at least trying something different. A Bond song that apes the formulaic sound and still fails, as Smith has, is more unforgivable.

Bond films rarely need the same kind of hype as other blockbusters. A couple of times they've enjoyed a perfect storm, like with Skyfall, but there have been so many entries that by now people know whether they want to see these movies and their performances should be judged accordingly. SPECTRE has had mediocre marketing, though.

In terms of Bond films, Skyfall is the outlier. It would be kind of unfair to be disappointed in Spectre if it makes $230m (for example), even though that would be slightly above average for Bond films since GoldenEye.
