% changes versus same day last week.

It's basically a toss-up on which film in the Top 3 won the day in revenue.  My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, thanks to strong pre-sales due to the manga giveaway to the first 1 million attendees, was #1 in admissions selling about 45% of its available tickets, but it likely had the lowest average ticket price so a victory in revenue isn't certain.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout had a good first day, one that indicates it'll pretty much open on par with the previous two entries.

Code Blue experienced a pretty hard drop from its opening day last week, but last Friday was also a bit boosted from people going to the theaters before the typhoon hit, so I still think it'll have a great second weekend -- especially since last Saturday was deflated a bit.

And I have to say... kinda poor for Incredibles 2. I'm sure it'll recover over the weekend, but it's definitely underperforming. It might even have to settle for a fourth place debut this weekend.

Also, Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer took a mammoth 90% dive versus last Friday and isn't worth tracking now (it made maybe $3,000 for the day).

Big weekend ahead. In fact, it's very likely to become one of the Top 10 Biggest Aggregated Weekends ever, and could crack the Top 5 if nothing disappoints.

Code Blue should repeat atop the box-office in its second weekend, but it's facing a big challenger in Mission: Impossible - Fallout. The last two Mission: Impossible films had nearly identical debuts (¥572 million & ¥573 million), but Fallout has noticeably better pre-sales than Rogue Nation, so it's likely going north of ¥600 million and could debut near ¥700 million. I'll provide a Saturday update and see if either film has the edge, but I'm betting it won't be clear until late Sunday.

My Hero Academia: Two Heroes and Incredibles 2, both animated films featuring super heroes interestingly enough, will be fighting it out for the third place position. My Hero Academia has the rush-out factor since the first one-million moviegoers are receiving an unreleased manga, but it's not playing as wide as Incredibles 2 and it'll probably be at a disadvantage on the average ticket price front. Incredibles 2 is largely disappointing and is "only" behaving as a standard Pixar release, but with pre-sales lower than Coco, it may have to settle for a fourth place debut.

Kamen Rider Build: Be the One has very impressive pre-sales, having already sold about 25% of its available tickets for the day, but it's suffering from lack of bigger screens and showtimes due to all the other big debuts and holdovers. Ultimately, it'll likely land on the mid-high end debut range of recent Kamen Rider releases.

Gosh this is such a bummer for I2.

I remember when Japan used to be one of the most reliable markets for Pixar...

According to Corpse, Pixar's brand/goodwill has been damaged in Japan ever since they released the poorly received Cars 2. The rise of WDAS and Illumination in Japan has also cannibalized some of Pixar's formerly loyal audience, whereas they had no real competition among other Hollywood animation studios in the past decade.

>Code Blue repeats atop the box-office, but it does drop slightly higher in its sophomore frame than other major domestic live-action films. However, its two-week total is higher than every domestic live-action film ever, thanks to the Friday start and the release being in the heart of Summer. The next week weeks will be very strong, especially when Obon Festival begins, and it's still very much on course to reach ¥8 billion ($70 million+) and become a #1 contender of 2018.

>Mission: Impossible - Fallout has to settle for a second place debut, but its opening weekend is 11% higher than both Rogue Nation and Ghost Protocol. The sixth-entry in the Mission: Impossible franchise sold an impressive 450,315 admissions over the weekend frame across 638 screens. Since opening on Friday, its 3-day admissions reached 619,507 admissions -- 14% above Rogue Nation's 3-day admissions. The Mission: Impossible series continues to be one of the most consistent and successful franchises, and Fallout will very likely exceed the ¥5 billion (~$45 million) blockbuster milestone once again.

>Incredibles 2 did end up underwhelming a bit, coming in slightly below the standard opening for a Pixar film in the market. The family superhero flick sold 331,697 admissions over the weekend frame on 432 screens. However, the film opened ahead of the weekend last Wednesday, and brought its 5-day admissions up to 750,000. It's still difficult to project where it's headed thanks to the rare Wednesday release, and its so-so weekend, but it should at least reach the ¥4 billion (~$35 million) milestone.

>My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, for some reason, hasn't had its weekend frame figures released yet, so its weekend gross above is a placeholder until it's released (I'll also be using an estimated number of admissions for the weekend frame until that's released, too). Since opening on Friday, though, the original animated film based on the popular manga/anime sold an impressive 401,542 admissions. The first one-million moviegoers are receiving a manga tie-in a part of a giveaway, so 40.2% of those have been handed out after three days.

>Kamen Rider Build: Be the One debuts in fifth place, selling 213,166 admissions over the weekend across 297 screens. The opening is a little above the typical Kamen Rider release in recent years, and topped last August's release by 4%. These films are always very frontloaded, holiday period coming up or not, and it'll probably just barely get above the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone.

>One Cut of the Dead makes a very surprising appearance in the tenth place position. The critically acclaimed film had been playing at just 2 locations since opening in June, and due to regular sell-outs for weeks, expanded to 9 locations this weekend and did exceptionally well. There are now plans to expand it further following its ranking in the top 10, so this may not be the last time we'll see it charting.

The aggregated top 10 ended up exceeding ¥3 billion, making it just the sixteenth weekend to do so since 1998 (chart edited a few posts up), but did ultimately come in lower than expected due to a couple openers debut a little lower than expected, and most of the holdovers experiencing harsh drops.

Obon Festival -- the strongest week of the box-office every year -- approaches, and right before it begins we'll see a strong weekend box-office with many notable holds, and potentially some increases as well.

>Code Blue is likely to repeat atop the box-office for a third-consecutive weekend, and will very likely exceed the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone in the progress. Its cumulative total is running ahead of every other film this year at the same-point-in-time, and it's about to enter the biggest holiday period of the year on Monday -- Obon Festival. Unless it receives a lackluster boost next week, I believe it has the advantage in the three-way battle with Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom for the 2018 yearly crown, and could finish near ¥9 billion ($80 million).

>Mission: Impossible - Fallout should post a good second weekend hold, but could fall to third place in its sophomore frame. It opened 11% higher than Rogue Nation, but will probably fall a bit behind it after this weekend. However, Rogue Nation was released a few days closer to Obon Festival and had received its initial boost in its second weekend. Once Fallout experiences the holiday period boon next week, I'm confident it'll pull ahead and not look back. ¥5 billion+ ($45 million) is still likely.

>Incredibles 2 didn't impress in its debut weekend, but it has since delivered great weekdays, and is in position to experience a second weekend increase. Japanese audiences have dismissed the Pixar sequels, so perhaps it just took awhile for moviegoers to gain interest in this entry. Its chances of reaching the ¥5 billion ($45 million) blockbuster milestone, and possibly even outgrossing the original film's ¥5.26 billion total have gone up dramatically in just a matter of days

>Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom had a harsh 50% drop last weekend due to screen/showtime & IMAX cuts, but it has since recovered some over the past weekdays, and based on Saturday pre-sales, looks poised to deliver a strong fifth weekend gross. It's still in the three-way battle with Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer and Code Blue for the 2018 yearly crown, however, it has slipped a bit and may be the likely third-place finisher. A total around ¥8 billion ($70 million) remains likely.

>Ocean's 8 debuts this weekend, but based on its Friday numbers and Saturday pre-sales, doesn't appear likely to become a hit in the market. It'll earn a top 5 debut, but an opening around the forecast will probably only result in about a ¥2 billion ($20 million) total.

>Code Blue repeats atop the box-office for a third-consecutive weekend, and exceeded the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone, and 4 million admissions, in the process. Its three-week total is higher than all but one domestic live-action film before it, 2003's Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge!, and its cumulative total is also running ahead of every other film this year at the same-point-in-time. Unless it receives a lackluster boost during Obon Festival (unlikely), I believe it has the advantage in the three-way battle with Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom for the 2018 yearly crown, and could finish near ¥9 billion ($80 million).

>Mission: Impossible - Fallout defends its second place position with a great hold, and a second weekend that is almost on par with the opening weekends of the two previous films in the franchise. Its two-week total is, however, trailing Rogue Nation's, but Rogue Nation opened a few days closer to Obon Festival and had already received its initial holiday boost. Fallout will pull ahead in just a few days and will likely gain a comfortable lead. I'm expecting a total around ¥5.5 billion ($50 million).

>Incredibles 2 didn't impress in its debut weekend, but it then delivered great weekdays, and achieved a strong second weekend increase. Japanese audiences have been dismissive of the Pixar sequels, so perhaps this entry needed the positive WOM to spread to get moviegoers interested in checking another sequel out. Its chances of reaching the ¥5 billion ($45 million) blockbuster milestone is much higher now, and it may possibly even outgross the original film's ¥5.26 billion total.

>Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom had a harsh 50% drop last weekend due to screen/showtime & IMAX cuts, but it recovered some over the past weekdays, and enjoyed an impressive fifth weekend increase. It's still in the three-way battle with Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer and Code Blue for the 2018 yearly crown, but it'll need a particularly strong Obon Festival to remain competitive. We'll see. A total of ¥8-8.5 billion ($70-75 million) remains the likely total.

>Ocean's 8 settles for a fifth place debut, and couldn't go beyond having an ordinary opening, either. It sold 177,808 admissions over the weekend across 326 screens. It won't be able to match the success of its male predecessors, and will likely only finish around ¥2 billion (~$20 million).

>One Cut of the Dead surprises yet again and remains -- and climbs one position -- in the top 10 after an expansion. The film has received glowing reviews at festivals, and among audiences since its release, with a lot of people saying it's one of the best zombie comedy films ever. That's a short-list of contenders, I'm sure, but it's been compared to Shaun of the Dead.

Note: The weekend gross/cumulative total for My Hero Academia: Two Heroes remains an estimate. I'll update it when the figures are available.

Obon Festival -- the strongest week of the box-office -- begins this week, so expect huge weekday performances that are likely to double the weekend grosses above from Monday through Friday.
