Err... dafuq is going on here?

In the world I live in, The Matrix blew TPM out of the fucking water in terms of VFX. There's a reason its effects were considered revolutionary and it sweeped the technical Oscars. The difference in quality between the movies only grows as years go by - TPM looks more and more like a cartoon, The Matrix still looks fantastic.

For realz. TPM looks like video game graphics.

The Matrix had better effects overall that have aged better (see the Gungan vs. Droid battle in TPM), but TPM was a big step forward with motion capture technology and that can't be denied.

Bullet time gimmick is as outdated as TPM. Now it is seen as a lame effect trend when every shitty DTD and syfy TV show have overdone it to death.

The mere fact that it's imitated to death shows how influential it was. Generally speaking, a movie that wins the Best VFX Oscar might not have technically the most innovative VFX (though often they do), it needs to have panache. It needs to inspire water-cooler talk, the "holy shit, did you see that? How did they do that?" discussion.

Matrix's visual is more than bullet time ...

That was the only thing innovative in terms of VFX and that wasn't even invented/pionneered with this movie...They took an already existing visual process 10 years before and extended it, pushing it further to make it mainstream.
