Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves | March 31, 2023 | Paramount | Amazon Prime advance screenings March 19 @ 2 PM

Just got home from the theater after watching this early screening and it was really good!

I can understand why some people might not be as enthusiastic because the story is pretty standard but the characters were great and I personally thought it was really funny.

If the comedy doesn't hit then I could see someone not liking this, but my showing had lots of laughs from the audience. Definitely a good popcorn flick to go see with friends.

I would say my showing was at least 95% full with only a handful of empty seats

Better than expected but I still thought it was meh/fine... the comedy just doesn't work 95% of time. It's so indebted to Deadpool that it literally rips off subplots from it. The snarky quippy "Well.. that just happened" style of "comedy" isn't quite mocking or condescending but it does overall hinder the admittedly fun sequences and designs while not providing much else. the movie is fun enough due to the nifty camerawork and  strong location work... there's no need in pointing out how goofy everything else. Embrace the material with sincerity and earnestness. I think the biggest issue, however, was the overliance on exposition and plot.. its very wheelspinning and side questy.

It'll probably do ok at the box office. It's still a fun time and the theater seemed to enjoy it, though they weren't laughing a lot and some walked out very well.

Genuinely thought it was fun and funny, though I did notice how some emotional moments were undercut with a joke ala Marvel and I even predicted when and what they'd say.

Even without knowing the material deeply, I loved seeing the lore. This succeeded where Warcraft failed -- Being accessible.

Seeing this next Sunday with my boyfriend. I am not a DnD player but my boyfriend is really intro DnD (makes sets, builds his own campagins, ect) so it will be interesting to see how we both walk away from this. I'll keep yall posted.

Wonder if all these Early Screenings will start a trend in the industry. But at that point, it's just "This movie comes out partially 2 weeks early, and then on a regular schedule on x date."

Sort of like how 'midnight showings' are now '4 PM the day before' showings.

I'm guessing they're doing this to get a higher number for opening weekend headlines?

With all these early showings being rolled into the preview numbers, the headline will look better if this comes in as 28-30m as expected. I don't think it will be an insignificant number, but I think it could bump that up to mid 30s.

If it does better because of early WOM then it's even better. Seems like a decent strategy tbh

But neither WOM from earliest batch of audience are exactly glowing, 86% RT from 50+ verified audience score.

Almost all the screenings were thru Atom tickets though, not Fandango. So I wouldn't be surprised if there are only 7 audience reviews on RT (it says fewer than 50)

"Glowing" would be the end goal, but "relatively enjoyable" is a big accomplishment for a TTRPG turned movie (again).

RT audience scores aren't terribly reliable anyway.

And by that I mean people seem to be arguing this movie isn't generally considered "good" using the same sort of very anecdotal evidence that Shazam 2 was "good" by a very small slice of noninfluential reviews on a metric of dubious value. Similar to the endless fights over Dominion's RT score rather than IMDB/Metacritic/Letterboxd whatever.
