This is a hilarious movie. Monsters University is the one of the best prequels ever made. Pixar has done it again.

Like most good prequels, this film feels very self-contained with no real nods to Monsters Inc. It’s fun to see Mike and Scully when they were younger (child Mike is incredibly cute). It’s also interesting that the dynamic between Mike and Randall was much different; they were actually friends (very briefly though).

Great voice work, great humor, and all around a sense of fun make this one a winner.

9 / 10

Starts off very weak and not entertaining at all.

However by the end it is a very heartwarming story and the entertainment value increases.

Biggest LOL moment is the Mother listening to her tunes and she rolls up the window and listen to death metal.

A-/B+

Not terrible but given it's a prequel to one of the best Pixar movies, I was disappointed and found the plot to be pretty formulaic outside of a couple instances (such as going into the human world). It's harmless fun and I did chuckle a few times but otherwise it was kind of forgettable.

Much like WIR, I was able to forgive a lot of the familiarity in some plot points, as they're ultimately character-driven movies. The focus is on Mike and Sulley's development through their earlier years, and it's just highlighted by a fun setting and great supporting characters.

I stand by my A- grade.

Monsters University is the best Pixar film since Toy Story 3 in 2010, and as good as Monsters Inc.

After Toy Story 3, Pixar Animation has been doing films that got short for the standards make by them. Cars 2 in 2011 didn't make it to the final round on the Academy Awards and Brave in 2012 won that year just because it was Pixar and they didn't receive the Oscar the year before, but the movie didn't have anything special. So, after the good streak of Wall-E, Up and Toy Story 3, Pixar fell way too low, buy this summer they have raise up and brought the perfect family movie of 2013 (by far).

Even thou we are seeing some of the old characters like (obviously), Mike, Sully, Randall and even George Sanderson (the monsters that is shaved for the 3312 alert), this movie feels different from its predecessor/sequel. What Monsters Inc. gain in sweetness with the Boo's character, this one compensates it with laughs. Since Finding Nemo in 2003, Pixar films has lost a little laughs, and introduced sweetness, but in University the smiles are back.

But it's not only about the laughs. The whole philosophy of the world is different. Inc. was about questioning the world they live in and everything they know about human kids. In University, scaring a kid is a good thing and is what give value a monster. If a monster is not scary then, what kind of monster is it? So, those two simple things gave the movie a whole new and different vibe.

The story is pretty much what we have seen in the trailers, but funnier. However, there are some unexpected twists that make it a even more solid film. So, we are safe to say that you haven't seen it all, even if you have seen every single trailer and clip in the internet. The ending is great, odd coming from Pixar, it works perfectly to the story when you think about it and don't make room for any sequel to the prequel, because it closes every gap.

It would be a cliché to say that the animation is amazing. This is Pixar that we're talking about. All the details on hair, scales, skin and even feathers are stunning. Even better than that is the animation on the characters expression. It is unbelievable. They don't have to say a word to send a message because with their faces they say it all. Sully could be an Academy Award winner, but what Mike does with one eye and a round body doesn't have a word to be described.

Some people will say that in Monsters Inc. Mike says to Sully, "You have been jealous of my looks since fourth grade". However, the characters first meet in college. Well, director Dan Scalon said that they actually thought about that and get to the conclusion that Mike said that as a common expression referring to a long time period and not literally that they have meet since 4th grade. The only problem is that to sustain that excuse they should have use it at least one time in this film. However, we never hear such a phrase to be told by Mike or any other character in the film. That will make those people think that Scalon only said that excuse to safe the story.

If you are human enough to ignore that stupid and insignificant expression, then you will enjoy Monsters University. You will laugh, the kids will love it and everyone will remember why they fell in love with Pixar and this particularly characters 12 years ago.

I thought this movie overall was good, but the the last 30 minutes were so exciting. If only the whole movie was as good as the final act. But it wasn't, so I give it a B too.

Oh and the original was waaaaaay better.

the only real problem I had was that there was something but was just not believable, even for a movie like this

All the monsters don't think Mike has the ability to be scary and they get proven right when he's in a room full of little girls and, when they see him, instead of being scared, think he's cute and want to pet him and play with him.

Somehow, I don't think the average eight or nine year old kid who wakes up and sees a four foot tall green monster in his room, who looks like a giant ball with skinny arms and legs, has a giant mouth with fangs, and only one giant eye in the middle of his face, would think "Oh, how cute. I want to go pet it".

In real life, he would be paralyzed with fear or go running out of the room screaming and crying and refuse to go back in. And maybe need therapy.

MU had a horrible release date. Even the weekend after Memorial day weekend(like Cars opened) would have given it a better gross before DM2 crushed it.

It had a smaller 2nd weekend drop than Brave and Wall-e despite a much bigger opening and being a prequel, but ended with a smaller overall multiplier after falling 57% in 3rd weekend when DM2 opened. In fact MU and Cars 2 are the only Pixar films with a smaller multiplier than 3.5

MU's 2nd weekend drop of 44.7% was smaller than it's next 3 weekend drops and the 2nd smallest drop till it's weekend went below 1mil. Disney left a lot on the table due to the scheduling.

I never waited so long to rewatch a Pixar movie and sadly it got worse. Mediocre in every way except for the animation. Infected with PC bs, horribly cliche characters (I know it was intentional but still), Dreamworksnized humor, emotional moment fell flat (Cars2 and this were the only Pixar film to manage that) and the last 15 minutes felt like a hour. What happened to you Pixar? I'm deeply disappointed. Fuck you Disney, it's all your fault, FUCK YOU. No way around it, horrible for Pixar standars and the second worst of the studio 55/100
