The studio of the movie you're about to watch picks two trailers and the theater decides the rest. In your case the theater decided to play Sausage Party.

I'm pretty sure the way it's always been is that for each movie, the other studios submit at least one trailer to be attached before each movie, depending on the target audience. I've followed this stuff long enough to notice the trends.

Seems it's disappointingly easy to "censor" the marketing. They just zoomed out the poster image and got his legs in

Not sure how those reviews count: the movie wasn't finished yet when they saw that screening.

I've heard that they showed the parts, they were just unfinished, so they should count

Still: the film is unfinished. It was a work-in-progress, thus only reviews of the finished film should count.

I actually think it's an even bigger compliment that all of them liked the unfinished version of the product. I was not expecting that.

 

This has potential.

The other side is people are inclined to be optimistic when there's still work to be done and/or they haven't seen the whole product. It's the entire basis of movie trailer campaigns.
